'/GENTLEMEN —At the request of a \J large number of the Electors, and after giving the political situation the fullest considemtion, I have decided to present myself as a candidate for your suffrages. During the ensuing week I will address you at the various centres of population within the district. I will then fully explain ray political views. In the meantime I will only say that, while prepared to give the policy enunciated by Sir George Grey, a general support, I will not pledge myself {if elected) to blindly follow up any particular leaders, but will consider upon its merits every measure introduced into tbe House—whether by the Government, by the Opposition, or by independent members,. , On two points, however, I am prepared to declare myself. Whether in the House or cut of it, toshall oppose any factious or sectarian attempt to interfere with. THE EDUCATION ACT AS IT IS, And I will give to every measure calculated to develop, by the expenditure of public money, THE ENORMOUS MINERAL RESOURCES OF THE DISTRICT, my hearty and strenuous support. /’I ENTLEMBN, I beg respectfully to \J inform you that, at die request ot a large number of your body, it is my' intention to become a candidate for your suffrages at the Ensuing Election of a member of the House of Representatives to fill the seat at present vacant by the resignation of C. E. Button Esq. I shall take early opportunities of addressing the Electors at the various centres of population throughout' the district. I am prepared to give a general support to the Ministry of which Sir George Grey is the chief, and in the meanwhile I pledge myself that, if returned, I will conscientiously and to the best of my ability devote my energies to secure the welfare of the district, not forgetting that it forms a part of one of the most flourishing and important Colonies in the Southern Hemisphere.
