TJxc International Congx*ess, than which no ixxore important one has ever assembled in Europe, was to ooinmonce its sittings at Berlin, on the 13th inst., to-day. ° A popular lecture, under the coxnpi’ehensxve title of “ Things in General,” will be given in the Presbyterian Church this evening by the Rev. R. Falconer. The proccds will be devoted towards paying oft the debt upon the church. Mr Falconer is an eloquent speaker, and will doubtless handle the subject nx a way to interest an audience which we hope will be a large and appreciative one. The following resolution has, on the motion of Mr Seddon, been passed by the County Council .-—“That it is the intexxtion of this Council on Wednesday, the lOtlx day of July, 1873, to make a general rate of one shilling in the £ on the rateable value of all property within the County as entered in the rate-book, for the period beginning Ist April, 1878, and ending 31st March, 1879, to be due and payable in one sum on the 14th July 1878.” Mr Blake is the successful tenderer for the construction of the Tereuxakau bxido-e at £7383 ; and Mr W. Smith for the construction of the Hokitika river bridge at £7130. ° ’ A correspondent writes as follows : Houses and sections at Dillman’s Town, since the completion of the road, are daily becoming more valuable. A store in the Main street which has been closed for about six months, changed hands yesterday at a satisfactory advance on pievious offers j and building sites, which are now getting scarce, are well held for £1 a foot. There is also a disposition to invest in a good hotel with a large room and other requisite apartments, but owners are pretty stiff in their ideas. A share or two in fair wages claims have likewise passed to new owners. Timber is on the ground for two new butchering establishments which are about beum erected.” • ° In the Bankruptcy Court, Greymouth, yesterday, before His Honor Judge Weston, the following Kumara business was disposed of. -Re .Lewis Moses, Kuuuara, debtor.—Mr Guinness for the trustees, Mr Warner for Butter worth Bros. It will be remembered that the debtor filed a deed of arrangement in this Court, and that the creditoxy refused to accept it. The latter then moved the Court to adjudicate the debtor a bankrupt under the Act of 18/0, but the time limited for the presentation of the petition having expired in the opinioxx of the Judged the application was refused at the last sitting of she Court. The deed remained unexecuted. The trustees now asked for directions, more especially as to whether a dividend of 2s (id could be paid upon the debts, between £4OOO and £SOOO. His Honor ; Is the matter within the control of the Act ; As the creditors have refused the deed, have I power to iuterfcin ; Mr Warner: The matter is u , longer sub judica. Mr Guinness : It is certainly doubtful, but cannot the Court advise the trustees under the 11th section I iney would be glad of his Honor’s assistance. i lie J edge felt that lie had no power to interfere, or to advise the trustees. The case was disposed of so far as the Court was concerned.
We understand that all the Insurance Companies who were losers by the late fire in Main street promptly settled the claims against them, with the exception of the Phoenix Company. Mr Bulstrode, who had a policy in that company, has not yet been able to get his claim satisfied. It is worthy of notice that the companies that have settled are Colonial ones. About 1800 salmon fry were, the West Coast Times states, safely deposited in the Hokitika, Arahura, and Kokitahi rivers last night. Since the last consignment was received the young fry have grown to a good size, some of them being from four to six inches in length.
