This was referred to the Finance Committee, and, on the suggestion of Cr. Cornfoot, the Town Cieik was instructed to inform the next Inspector that he must take anote of the fees and tines. The Town Clerk drew the attention of the Council to the tact that the Government had done nothing towards coveriug the dangerous drain in Seddon street. Cl- Hanna moved that the Town Clerk write again on the subject. Cr. Cornfoot thought the work should be done at once by the Council, and payment afterwards obtained from the Government. In reply to Cr. O'Mara,'the Town Sui veyor said that there were about 7 or 8 chains which could be roughly covered at a cost of about 10a per chain. It wad decided to adopt Cr. Cornfout's .suggestion. On the motion of Cr. Cornfoot, seconded by Cr. Pearn, it was resolved that in future the Auditors' fees should be six ymueas each. Cr. O'Hara seconded. j Cr. Cornfoot moved the adjournment ! of the consider ifion of the question for ; a month. It would be a great mistake ! to grant the petition untif they were in j funds. They had got an overdraft of £SOO from the bank on the distinct understanding that no more public j works should be undertaken until they j were in funis; aud,it would be a gross '

breach of faith to commence making footpaths now. Cr. Campbell seconded the amendment. Cr, Hanna; You make a bye-law providing that footpaths shall be made on certain conditions, and now that <shese conditions are complied with yon repudiate you own bye-law. I do'nt wish the Borough Council to involve itself, but Councillors should keep faith with the public as well as with the bank. Cr. O'Hara said that after Cr. Cornfoot's remarks with respect to the bank he would rather see the work postponed. Cr. Ancher pointed out that it would be placing the Bank Committee in a false position to comply with the petitiou, and suggested the postponement of the matter for a month. The amendment was carried. Cr. Hanna said he would never present another petition. The resolution parsed at a special meeting, fixing the rate at Is in the £, was carried. The Council then adjourned for a week.
