his return from his Parliamentary duties in 1876, he found the corespondent, James Waddell, had been engaged by his wife to assist in the business. Woolcock suspected that an improper intimacy existed between them, but for some time could obtain no positive proof. Th«y lived in a house separate from the store, -which was settled upon Mrs Woolcock. She at length refused to admit her husband to tho house, and he had to take lodgings in town. Soon after this Waddell was imprisioned for assaulting an old man, and on his release he went to Nelson, Mrs Woolcock following him in the course of a few days, and they lived at an hotel as man and wife, passing under the name of Osborne. Waddell then went down to Dunedin, where he was again rpjoined by Mrs Woolcock. After heating evidence, the Court granted a rule nisi. The Census returns of the Colony are now completed—males, 230,898 ; females, 183.273 : total, 414,171. In this is included 4300 Chinese, but no Maoris. The population of the Chatham Islands is 100 males and 72 females. Chrtstchurch, May 27. Colonel Brett's station, Mount Torlesse, was sold for £II,OOO. It comprised 21,000 acres leasehold, 530 preemptive right, 800 freehold, 10,000 sheep, and house and station buildings. At the Jockey Club Meeting the Treasurers statement showed a credit balance for the year of £l9 7s 3d, as against £2 5s for the previous year, besides which several permanent, improvements have been paid for out of current revenue, and orer 100 of old debts cleared off, notwithstanding th« increase in the value of stakes.
