The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. TUESDAY, MAY 28, 1878.

By cablegram the other day we learned that what it is usual irreverently to style "another batch of Colonial Knights" had been made. There are those who sneer at everything " Colonial," from a Colonial Bishop to Colonial beer, and it is this class also that seeks to deride the titles with which eminent public services, or highattainments are frequently rewarded in this part of the world. There is in this sort of thing, it appears to us, a good deal of the " sour grapes" element, intermingled with lack of discernment, and bad taste. It may be that here and there such honors are bestowed on unworthy persons, but t.h.t is no reason why the principle should be denounced. So long as Great Britain exists under the present form of Government, so long will the Crown be the source of all honor, and so long will those who stand nearest the throne occupy the highest social positions. To have a tide conferred upon one is simply the outward and visible sign of having figuratively been called clcser to the person of Her Most Gracious Majesty, and that, we take it, is a distinction of which e.very one of her subjects may feel proud, and which may well form a laudable ambition on the part of any honest man. So fir, then, from joining in with those who speak contemptuously of titles co iferred on deserving (Jolonits. we regard them as healthy incenti-es to progress in all its v tried branch™.
