London, May 21. The statement that General Todlehen had sent an ultimatum to the Porte demanding that the Turks should evacuate Shurala, Varna, and Batoura, and that the Russians would occupy Bnjukdere, is semi-officially denied. ’ The speech of Lord Hartington was moderate, being confined to questions of constitutional rights. The object of concealing from Parliament the step of c.illing out the reserves could only be to asse. t the prerogative of the Crown. The Attorney-General and Mr Gladstone argued the legal points. The latter protested against making a precedent of the act, violating constitutional liberties. Mr Newdegate supported the resolution. Mar 22. On the resumption of the debate on Lord Har ting ton's motion, the speeches were desultory. The Australian cricketers were iveaten at Nottingham in one innings, oniy making 39 in their second. A four per cent Queensland loan- of one million and a-half is announced. Constantinople, May 21. A number of riotous refugees entered Polacraud, ami cheemf for exSultau Murad. The rioters refusing to disperse, were fired on by the military. London, May 22. The Attorney-General, in reply to a question, said the Government had received no information confirming the report of vessels designed for privateers
having been bought in America by Russian agents. Nothing authentic is known regarding Count SchouvalofPs mission to St. Petersburg. It is still hoped the Conference will meet. LATEST UNPUBLISHED. A great fire here destroyed the palaces of the Minister of Justice and the Supreme Council *f State, The Russians are advancing within the neutral zone. London, May 23. The Supplementary Estimates were introduced to-day, for the Indian Contingent Army, and for the increase to the Navy on the New Zealand station. On the resumption of the debate, the policy of the Eastern Question was untouched, and Lord Har ting ton's motion was negatived. May 23. The strictest secresy is maintained re Scliouvaloff’s mission, pending the reply of the British eminent. The prevalent opinion is that it is of a pacific character, and that there will be an early meeting of Congress.
