Th-re is no special amusements of anv kind wovided m Kumara, but there'are ample facilities for all loyal lieges to drink the time-lionored toast of "The Queen : God bless her. To-morrow will be observed as a bank holiday. The telegraph and postal departments, will be open to the public during tiie same hours as oil Sunday. • In the Resident Magistratest Court this morning, the plaintilf in iiu action, a storekeeper of proverbial loquacity, applied for a judgment summons a'.'umt defendant, which his Worship immediately granted much to the apparent cbsafcisfac-
tion of tie applicant, who intended to edify the Bench and audience present by one of his usual declamatory orations. There were no police cases at the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning. A few undefended civil cases where heard of no public interest. We regret to learn that the wife of Mr John Edwards, a well-known resident of this town, died suddenly last evening. The funeral will take place to-morrow. It will be seen by an advertisement in another column that the Raphael gymnastic troupe reopen this evening, at the Theatre Royal, to enable those who have not already witnessed these clever acrobats the opportunity of so doing. We are requested to state, that the great clearing sale advertised by D. Davidson and Co., will not commence before Saturday morning, in consequence of to-morrow being a general holiday. The London Standard concludes an article on the Eastern Question, with the following predictive remarks :—" The bag and baggage policy has been played one way in Europe, but it may be reversed in Asia. If England is driven to enter upon this war it will be with a great and very real reluctance ; but if once she draws the sword it will be with a stern determination I not to sheath it until the Eastern Question is settled in a perfectly satisfactory manner for the next two or three generations." The following notice from the War Office appears in the London Gazette of January 22nd :—"English Hussars—Sergeant Frank James Carandini, from the 16th Lancers, to be second lieutenant, vice L. H. Jones, transferred to the sth Lancers." Lieutenant Carandini, is a son of Madame Carandini, who has for many years been known to us as a popular vocalist. A bright story is told of the accomplished wife —now dead —of General Hooker. When she was the admirjd Miss Groesbeck, of Cincinnati, she was once at an evening party, when a fashionable ' young dandy wa3 asked if he would like to ! be presented to her. "Oh yea," said he j languidly, "trot her out." The lady: overheard the remark, and when she was ' presented she adjusted her eye-glasses de- ! liberately, and slowly scanned his clothing ; from boot to collar. The survey finished" she waved her hand and carelessly said,— " Trot him back, I have seen all there is of him." For miraculous cures by the use of Eucalypti Extract, read fourth [Advt.] °
