POST-OFFICE SAVINGS BANKS.
The Post-Office Saviugs Banks in the Colony are still increasing. At the end of last year there were" 137 offices open as compared with 124 at the corresponding period in the previous year. The aec unts opened during the quarter amounted to 2607, and the number closed was 2056. The amouut deposited during the three months was £ 167,364 Is, as compared with £154,976 2s Id in the December quarter in 1876. During the last quarter in the past year the sum of £151,639 18s 5d was withdrawn, a sum less than that withdrawn during the corresponding quarter in 1876. The excess of deposits over the withdrawals during last quarter was £15,724 2s 7d. When tins is compared with the sum by which the deposits exceed the withdrawals in the corresponding quarter in 1576 (£354 4s 2d), we obtain goad evidence that work is now more abundant and better paid than then, and that theworking classes are endeavoring to benefit by the circumstance by putting away aome of their surplus savings to be a stand-by in harder times.
