The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 1878.
Eaater Monday will be observed as a general holiday in town ; and although no extensive preparations have been made, there will be, (thanks mainly to the exertions of Mr M. O'Hara,) some sports, consisting chiefly of running and jumping, held in the Main street. The programme' comprising seven events, appears elsewhere. The concert given on Thursday evening in the Theatre Royal in aid of the funds of the Presbyterian Church was in every sense of the term a most successful one. A fuller notice of it will appear in our next. The drawing of the St. Patrick's School Art Union will take place on Easter Monday.' Persons interested are requested to meet at 7 p.m. at the residence of the Secretary, Mr Dennis j Hannan. i On Thursday evening the ordinary ; meeting of the Borough Council was, in j consequence of there being no quorum, adjourned until 11 a.m. to-day. Our report of the proceedings is unavoidably held over. Sir John Coode, the eminent engineer, passed through Kumara yesterday en route for Greymouth, putting up for the night at Spindeler's Crown Hotel. :' In the District Court, Greymouth, on Thursday, in re the bankruptcy of Lewis Moses, of Kumara, his Honor adjourned his decision until the 2nd May, to allow tune for Mr Warner to amend his pleas in the case. The following special cablegram, under date, London, April 9, appears in the Wellington Port :—" The Russians have seized and occupied tlw British Consulate ofhces at Rustchuck. England has claimed prompt redress for the outrage. The war excitement is increasing." A correspondent at Rome learns on good authority that the Pope has caused the notification of his accession which he sent to King Humbert to be addressed 'to the King of Sardinia." The Pope notwithstanding violent opposition, has ordered the Italian bishops to legalise their positions, giving them liberty to demand an exequatur from the Government. This defines the Pope's policy, and it means a tacit acceptance of the loss of temporal power. The West Coast Times says that there •will be better fields of horses start for the principal events on Monday and Tuesday next than have been witnessed at any race meeting there for a number of years past. It will be seen from our advertising columns that a half-share in that wellknown road-side hostelry, known to all travellers on the Christchurch Road as Old John's," is for sale. It is a favourite stopping place for stockmen, whoever succeeds " Old John" in the management is likely, in digging parlance, to " strike a patch." It will be observed from an advertisement in another column that the police have been instructed strictly to enforce the bye-laws relating to obstructions on streets and footways. Contractors who have not yet received their deposits accompanying tenders for | the widening of the Goldsborough Road, Sandy's Hill, and other works recently let by the County Council, can have them refunded by applying at Mr Seddon's Store, oeddon street. Socrates used to say that it was pleasant to grow old, with good health, and a good friend, and he might have reason as health is the greatest of all possessions and 'tis and an old maxim, that a hale cobbler is a better man than a sick Kin«, but unfortunately diseases of a painful ; and violent nature attack all, from the I Prince to the beggar, and then will a ' golden staff help gouty feet, or a wooden i stick, rheumatic legs to walk ? Reader— ! should you suffer with rheumatism j sciatica, lumbago, neuralgia or mnscuUr stifling p a in S> use "Ghollah's Great In- j chan Cures," the wonder of the Nineteenth ! Century. Testimonials may be seen and Medicines procured at all Medicine Ven- i dors.—[Advt.] ; A speccial telegram of the war news ' ' having reached D. Davidson and Co in ! tune for the Autumn and Winter stock ; they availed themselves of the opportunity • • to be first in the markets and purchase : while goods were cheap, leaving others to ' buy during pease negotiations, and conse- I quently haveto pay much more for them ' bo that D. Davidson and Co. will sell 25 ]
per cent, cheaper than any house on the West Coast. Their large and well-assorted stock being now opened and full replenished for the Easter holidays, an early call is solicited to the Berlin House, Seddon street, Kumara.—[Advt.]
