There will be no publication of the Ktjmara Times on Good Friday. Keach and Molloy's new punt for crossing the Teremakau has been launched, and traffic was commenced yesterday. The monthy inspection of the local Volunteers will be heldithis evening at the Public Hall at 7 p.m. sharp, at which every member must attend. The final arrangements for the match against Hokitika and Greymouth will be made after parade. We are informed that an exhibition of a panorama took place at the Theatre Royal last night; but the usual custom of sending a ticket of admission for a reporter not having been followed in this instance, we are unable to say anything about it. The Rev. J. A. Scott, who has been appointed to the permanent charge of this district by the Bishop, reached Hokitika on Saturday evening and visited Kumara on Monday. He will return to reside here on Saturday next, and will open the new building erected by the Church of England congregation on Easter Sunday. He will also arrange to hold services at regular intervals at Stafford and Waimea.. On Wednesday, 3rd inst, a man named Patrick O'Connor was indebted to the kindness of Mr Rugg, keeper of Kumara, for the • loan of a horse to take down to ; Hokitika for the purpose of assisting to bring.back a heavy load. Going down O'Connor Hitched up the borrowed horse behind- the' cart, and as it did not travel fast enough to meet the views of the borrower, he was guilty of the cruelty of tying it so tightly to the tail-board that it arrived in Hokitika in a lamentable condition from exhaustion, and subsequently died. At the Police Court yesterday O'Connor was charged that he did "wantonly hurt and harass a certain horse &c," and the ridiculously inadequate penalty of 10s, with 19s costs, was imposed on him. We scarcely think the Bench could have been in full possession of the facts of the case when it allowed O'Connor to escape so lightly. The County Council of Westland have Bolved the difficulties of dealing with the Arahnra Road Board, in a manner at once simple and economical. To the astuteness of Mr Seddon, the West Coast Times believes, is due the solution referred to. It is, by proclamation, declared that the several roads and tracks in the Arahura Road Board district are. County roads, and this proceeding is all that is necessary to practically abolish the Board, and—as far as the Council is concerned—to wipe out the debts of the Board also. It has been finally settled that the bridge over the Hokitika River is to be erected at Kanieri. Attention is directed to. the advertisement declaring County Roads that appears in another column.. On Good Friday the Greymouth aiid Kumara Tramway carriages will leave Greymouth at 6 a.m., noon and 4 p.m., and Kumara at 6 a.in., noon, and 4.30 p.m. Attention is directed to an advertisement in another column in which it notifies that the new Winter stock has arrived at the Cash Palace. It seems there is a second Miss Flite (vide "Bleak House"), and that she is in Auckland. At the rising of the Supreme Court the other day, this lady, who appears to be a regular attendant, came and demanded to know from a medical man and his friend, if it was right that that the "crier of the Court"—thus she phrased it—should be a Roman Catholic, declaring emphatically that this was "against the laws of Queen Victoria," and she would continue to ask the question until it was answered. The energy of her speech was such, the Herald says, that it was evident she considered a Roman Catholic crier a crying sin. A speccial telegram of the war news having reached D. Davidson and Co. in time for the Autumn and Winter stock, they availed themselves of the opportunity to be first in the markets and purchase while goods were cheap, leaving others to buy during peace negotiations, and consequently have to pay much more for them. So that D. Davidson and Co. will sell 25 | per cent, cheaper than any house on the j West Coast. Their large and well-assorted stock being now opened and full replenished for the Easter holidays, an early call is solicited to the Berlin House, Seddon l street, Kumara.—[Aovt.]
