Those of our contemporaries who have not made European diplomacy in connection with the Eastern Question a special study, may be forgiven for allowing their expressed opinions with respect to the outcome of the present situation to fluctuate in sympathy with the ever-varying construction which Baron Reuter’s agents place upon each day’s fresh complications. To our mind nothing has occurred since the Grand Duke Nicholas, at the head of the Russian army, on the 25th of April, 1877, entered Turkey, to alter theopinion then held by us that the movement was but the beginning of what must develop into the greatest general war ®f modern times. Diplomatists may. for their own ends be able to hinder and hamper the march of events; but that the ultimate appeal will be to arms is as certain as that the sun will set to-night.
