Those who are acquainted with the facts will read with mingled feelings of amusement and contempt the following telegram published in a Christchurch paper of the 22nd inst:—"Dunedin March 21. Father Hennebery Defended.—lt is reported that the statements of Father Hennebery at Kumara have caused some excitement here. Today, the New Zealand Tablet, the Roman Catholic organ, published the following in an extra :—" It is hardly necessary for us to inform our Catholic friends that it is impossible the Rev. Father Hennebery can have made the statement attributed to him by the Hokitika Evening Star and the Kumara Times, for they are already aware that no Catholic priest could brand mixed marriages as invalid, no matter how contracted. We thing it as well to Bay, however, that we. have received.a telegram from Kumara, by which we are informed that the accusation has been indignantly contradicted by the Rev. Father Martin of Hokitika, and the whole Catholic congregation. The statement is a pure fabrication." The Hospital Ward Committee have decided to convene a public meeting, to be held in the Theatre Royal on Tuesday, April 2nd, to consider the question of taking advantage of the offer of the Government to assist the people of Kumara in establishing and maintaining an Hospital. As this is a matter in which the women are quite as much interested as the men of Kumara, it is hoped they will muster in force, and throw the weight of their influence into the scale.

It would appear that some of the energy displayed at the late concert has attached itself to the general musical portion of the public. Last evening a number of gentlemen met and joined themselves into a society to be called the "Kumara Choral Union," for the practice of sacred and secular music of a high class. There will be an entrance fee of five shillings, and subscription of half-a-crown a month. Ladies are to be admitted free. As the society is formed for the practice of advanced music, no person will be admitted as a member who does not show a moderate amount of knowledge of the art. The Local Committee of the State School have been applied to for the use of One of the class-rooms every Tuesday to carry on the business.
