FATHER HENNEBERY’S MISSION.
[to the editor.]
Dear Sir—Permit me to say that, in view of the fact that the assertions made lately by the Hokitika Evening Star concerning Father Hennebery and his preaching have been discovered to be false, and that they were pronounced false by the loud and indignant voices of the Catholic congregation of Hokitika, who had listened to all the missionary’s preaching, and received besides a public denial from the pastor, Father Martin, whose letter to the effect has been published in the columns of the offending journal, it is expected that you also, who published the slanders of the Star, copy from it their refutation—Father Martha’s letter—which I enclose. And, besides, please withdraw your offensive sayings, within two days, made about Father Hennebery, and his missions. It will be to your own interest to do so ; but, if you will not, you will have to blame yourself for the consequences. Yours truly, M. M'Caughey. Kumara, March 18, 1878.
[Had Father Martin’s letter, or any similar letter, been addressed to us we should have inserted it; but we decline to depart from a recognised rule by publishing a letter sent to the editor of another journal. So far from the statements alleged to have been made by Father Hennebery having been refuted, evidence accumulates proving the Star’s report to have been correct. We have nothing to retract, and nothing to fear. —Ed. K. T.]
