[to the EDITOR.] Sir— When 'addressing the electors at the Theatre Royal last evening, J referred to a circularMr.received from the Bishop of New;Zealand, -to show that grants in aid;of schools established by religious denominations were petitioned aihd olheiwise asked for by the Church of England. When speaking, I discovered that I had mislaid the document* and I stated that I would take, an early .opportunity of making known the contents of the paper. It uftpow. before me, and is as follows “ Resolutions adopted by, the Synod of the Diocese of Christchurch, 27th October, 1877,; , * “ the Synod adopt the principles upon which tno petition to both Houses of the Legislature, of the Colony agreed to by the General Synod at its last- Session is baaed, and earnestly, recommend them to the Churchmen of the diocese as a basis of commonactiOn in their efforts to secure- religious instruction for the children of the Church in the dayschools of tlie Colony, viz. : U T That P, any general measure that may bo adopted for the establishment of a system of public education, provision may be made for the communication of religious instruction by ministers of religion or persona l duiy -ailtlxorised by them to the . children belonging to their respective communions during school hours. . 2. That any such measure may contain a-provision for grants in aid of maintenance 'niade' : to schools set on toot by any religious denomination, provided that - the -secular • instruction given in sucn schools shall come "up to he required .standards: and satisfy the uoverUrhent inspectors.- - •- ■- 3. That .his Lordship the President be requested, to forward without delay f printed copy of tlie .kWove resolutioii to every member of both Houses of the Legislature, and. that' printed.copies of to be sent to the. Right Jtev. the Bishop of Dunedin to be laid before S? which is about to meet on the 7th of November^ I beg to direct special attention to the second paragraph, which distinctly shows that the Church of Eflglarid precisely ,thh .same, .concessions as those demanded by thg .Catholic Church.
