A telegraph station is now open at Waitara, in the County of Taranaki. The following special telegram, under date London, February 7th, appears in the Christchurch Press :—“ln violation ■of her promises, and in defiance of England’s warning, Russia has occupied Constantinople. There is intense excitement. ” In one or two of the civil cases called ■at the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, in which the summonses had been forwarded to Hokitika some three weeks ago for service, and no return had as yet been received, his Worship took occasion to comment very strongly on the laxity of the Court officers at that place, and instructed the Clerk of the Court here to telegraph at once relative thereto. The County Council has resolved that tenders shall be called for a main road through Dillman’s Town as far as Larrikin’s track. Mr Price R.M. takes a very commonsense view of the powers vested in a magistrate to make orders for payment under a judgment summons. In a case brought before him this forenoon it was elicited in evidence that the defendant, since making payment of the last instalment on the debt due, had earned not more than 15s per week. This, the plaintiff contended, was “not small wages,” but his Worship declined to make any order under the circumstances, and dismissed the summonswith costs. At yesterday’s sitting of the Westland County Council the claim of Mr Wylde for the sum of £99 7s, for contract survey of line of road from Dillman’s Town to Christchurch road, was again brought before the Council by Mr Seddon. He moved that the Public Works Committee, with the Consulting Engineer and Mr Clarke, be authorised to come to an amicable arrangement with Mr Wylde re payment for contract. The resolution was seconded pro forma by the Chairman, but was lost on a division, the majority of the Council considering that overtures for a settlement should properly come from Mr Wylde. His Worship, the Resident Magistrate instructed the Clerk of the Court yesterday that all undefended civil cases on the list should invariably be deposed of prior to the hearing of defended cases. By adopting this course the convenience of litigants is conserved. A purchaser of some second-hand furniture at Launceston, Tasmania, the other day, found bank scrip to the value of £750 concealed in it. Funds to sustain the agitation on behalf of the Tichbome claimant are failing. In response to a stirring appeal issued a few weeks ago to the working classes by Dr. j Kenealy calling for one million sixpences, he announces with much grief that he has received only £2O.
