HOSPITAL COMMITTEE.

A special meeting for the purpose of I considering the financial position of the Kurnara Hospital Wa rd was held lash evening in the Brian Boru Hotel. PreI sent: Mr Dungan, chair; Messrs Stewart,* Ancher, Keenan, M'Gregor, i and the Secretary, Mr Nicholson. The following gentlemen were elected members of Committee : Messrs vßobert Paul, O'Hara, and S. The expenses were very heavy, the subscriptions light, and it really appeared to him a question whether they could keep open th 9 ward any longer. Mr Keenan said that if the ward had to :■ be abandoned, the responsibility would rest with the miners ihemselves. The Secretary laM upon the table a '.'■ statement of receipts aiid expenditure for the past six months shewing a nominal credit balance of £lO2 15s 1 Id. If all, outstanding liabilities were discharged this, however, would be reduced toabout £22; aud had it not been that last year a' considerable portion of the £3OO grant far building purposes was available for maintenance, the Committee would have been about £l3O in debt. < A long conversational diiscusslon en'sued, in the course of which it was generally agreed that-one more effort should be made to place the funds on a satisfactory"tofe& j and if that failed, to close the ,ward. , i Mr Anchor then moved " That in consequence of the very indifferent support the Coinmittee has received from the Mining Community they are resolved, unless such support improves, to close the ward in three months from date." Mr Croumbie-Brown seconded.— Carried. Mr O'Hara moved "That on and after the 20th inst the town be systematically and energetically canvassed for subscriptions." Mr Paul seconded.—Carried. , The following canvassers were then appointed.— Seddon street Messre Stewart, Ancher, and Denfield ; Main street-r-Messrs OHara, Keenan, and Dungan. , '' The sale of the following Hospital warrants was reported.—Dungan, 1; Ancher, 3; McGregor, 2 ■ - *-'• • A letter was received from Mr Dale, Hon. Treasurer of the New Year's Day Pic-nic, enclosing cheque for £lll6s 6d, balance from the funds, and voted to the Hospital. Oh the motion' of Mr Ancher, seconded by Mr O'Hara, it was resolved that a letter conveying the thanks of the Committee for the liberal donation be addressed to Mr Dale. It was resolved that, the Bank of Australasia , being : closed, the Committee's account, be,kept at the Union Bank, and that.the Secretary and Hon. Treasurer, be'. rj authorizetl to sign olipques.'
