The Borough Council meet this evening, at half-past seven. Thomas Ryan, who was remanded at the Resident Magistrate’s • Court this morning, has been taken down to the Hokitika Gaol, the accommodation at the Kumara gaol being very limited. Mr Perkins complained in the R.M. Court to-day that a summons had been sent down to Hokitika last Saturday to be served on a well-known resident there, and no return had yet been made. He thought some one must be to blame for such a long interval.
Mrs Scully, widow of Patrick Scully, who was accidentally killed a short time ago, is, we understand, in very straitened circumstances. Her state of health too will not permit of licr over-exerting herself. Sevei-al gentlemen are interesting themselves in her behalf. Subscriptions for her relief will be thankfully received by Mr S.S. Pollock, who has kindly consented to act as treasurer for any fund raised for the widow.
There will benocoroner’sinquestheld on the remains of the late Joseph Daniels, it being considered that the ends of justice will be sufficiently served by the judicial inquiry which is to take place in the Eesident Magistrate’s Court.
, A telegraph station is now open at 'Sheffield, in the County of Selwyh. Thursday next, the 4th October, is proposed by the ministers of the vari ous denominations in Hokitika lo be observed as a day for special prayer for relief from the sickness now prevailing in that town. 1 As announced, the fire bell was temporarily suspended yesterday in the .place appointed for it in Seddon-street, •on the West side of Main-street. About six o’clock a trial was made of the sound of the bell, which was found to. be very satisfactory. It could be heard •till over the town, and even on the other side of the Teremakau. The West Coast Times believes that the County Council propose to take the ■road fron. Dillman’s Town to Humara out of the hands of the Arahura Rpad Board, and to declare it a County road, as as to obtain the management of it. Mr Lamach has given notice of a motion disapproving of the Government having continued to publish the Waka Maori, in defiance of the votes of the House. Mr Whitaker, for the Government, has -declared that the motion is one of “Want of Confidence.” At the adjourned meeting of the cricket club held last night in Rugg’s Hotel, Mr J. Heaphy in the chair, the following business was transacted : Officers for the year were elected : President, Mr R. J. Seddon; Vice-Presi-dent, Mr J, Plunket ; Captain, Mr J. Heaphy. A code of by-laws was framed. A committee of management was formed. The challenge from the Hokitika club to play a match at Arahuni on the 9th November was accepted, and it was resolved to challenge the Greyraouth club to play at any time which will suit'them.
It appears to be doubtful that the Australian cricket team will visit New Zealand. Arrangements for their trip to the old country are in -a forward state. All the men have signed articles and there is a strong probability of their securing Ev ins, the famous bowler. .
