BOROUGH COUNCIL.
An ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held last night, at the Council Chambers. Present—His worship the mayor, Crs. Bulstrode, M'llroy, Pearn, Ancher, and Hanna. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed.
The Town Cle-k read copies of correspondence as follows :—A letter to the Colonial Secret u-y asking that the money received hy the Licensing officer, and paid into the public account, might be placed t > the Borough Fund : Letters to the Westland Council and Arahura Road Board: Letters to the Banks asking their terms : Letter to the Fire Brigade, conveying permission to erect bell: Letter to the Waste iLands Board, asking for Cemetery to be vested in the Council: Letters toMr Perkins, Mr C.Y.'O'Connor, &c,
The Town Clerk also read the following:—A letter from the Union Bank, asking for postponement of tenders: Letters from Fire Brigade asking that Lieut. Powell's name be added to the list of Fire Inspectors Letters: from the Under-Secretary acknowledging notification of R. J. Seddon's election as mayor. A letter from Mr Perkins consenting to'act as Borough Solicitor for a retaining fee of five guineas, and payment for work done: Letter from Westland County Clerk, re conference, suggesting that a statement be made showing the amount claimed after allowances, and anticipating that the Council would meet in a liberal spirit "equitable, just, and reasonable" claims : &c. The correspondence was received.
The Towu Surveyor reported that the nuisance at Quinn's corner could not be abated for £lO. The creek was described as being so contaminated that it would probably engender serious amount of malaria during the summer, and would requhe much more than £lO spent upon it. Whatever was done should be with a view to the creek
becoming one of the principal outlets for the drainage of the town, provision being made for a new culvert or bridge in Seddon Street, and for raising that street to a proper level. He would not recommend the diversion of the creek.
The Town Surveyor also recommended the filling of the hole, between the Adelphi and Hokitika Hotels, to within a foot of the surface. Received.
The Mayor moved that the consideration of the correspondence be postponed.
The opening of the applications for the office of Inspector of Nuisances was postponed, as it was believed that Inspector James would allow a member of the Police force to be appointed. The consideration of Bank tenders was postponed, and it was resolved that the Bank of New Zealand should continue to act until the Council was in a position to give the necessary information to the Banks. An estimate of reveuue and expenditure for the next twelvemonths, according to the Act, was laid upon the table, as follows :
Total ... £6,260 0 0 The estimate was adopt-d, an-1 ordered to be open for inspection by the burge*ses at the Council offices, The Mayor moved, that a rate in accordance wtfch the Rating Act, of one shilling in th» pound, be struck on all rateable property iti the Borough. The rate to be payable in one amount on the loth October. Carried. The Town Clerk was instructed to have thtj same publicly notified as required by the Act. The Mayor, with Cr. Anther and Pearn were appointed to sign the ratebook on its being printed. The Council then adjourned till 2 o'clock on Monday next.
