The amateur performance at the Theatre Royal, last night, fully sustained the reputation of those who took part in it, and this too in spite of alterations in the cast which h.. d to be made at the last moment. The house was well filled, and those present were in excellent humour, and applauded liberally. Miriam's Crime," as performed by the amateurs, has been so recently noticed in these columns, that there is little necessity for eomment ou the present occasion. We may, however, notice that Mr Morgan, as ** Huffin," had a "better, ©pportiiuity of showing his capabilities than before, having had longer time for " study." He acquitted himself well. *' Scumley" was taken by Mr Lanauze at an extremely brief notice. We must compliment this gentleman on his excellent make-up, and conception of the character. His reading was decidedly more to our taste than that of the former representative of the character. Mr Weir's " Daniel" was really good. Of the rest we can i only repeat our former praise. The farce of "Mad as a Hatter" went "screamingly," thanks to the excellent acting of all concerned. Mr Bishop was at a disadvantage, as he had to appear as " Charles," wif.hout having had time to become acquainted with the text. Despite all drawbacks, however, the farce was a brilliant success, to whieh the efforts of Mrs Henne and Mrs McGee in no small degree contributed. Too much credit cannot be given to Mr J- S. Jolly for his admirable stage management. Between the pieces Mr W. Bishop made a brief speech, thanking his friends, both in front of and behind the curtain. After the dramatic entertainment a quadrille party was formed, and dancing was kept up with great spirit for some hours. The alarm of fire was raised about noon to-day, a chimney at the rear of the Clarendon Hotel having ignited. Several members of the fire brigade under Capt. King were instantly on the spot, and their efforts speedily extinguished the flames.
