MINING ACCIDENT.
A parrow escape from a fatal accident happened shortly before bo&n fci day in Mc'Kinnon's claim, better known as Ward's, about half W mile beyond the break, at Billman's. A miner named David Carter had just brought in a truck which he was anxious to take out again filled once more before knocking off for dinner. Unfortunately the truck caught against a prop and displaced it, causing three or four " Bets * to give way. Carter' was at once covered over with gravel. Luckily for him a mate "noticed the accident and lost no time in calling for assistance and setting to work to release the imprisoned man. The latter was not hurt by any falling stone, and the quantity of earth which had fallen was not sufficient to crush him; he was also protected somewhat by the fallen timber. After working for about half an hour his friends extricated him, and at once conveyed him to the local hospital ward. He complains of soreness about the chest, but appears to have suffered almost no injury.
