The Returning Officer gives public notice of the necessaiy steps to be taken for the eleetion of the first Mayor and Councillors of the Kumara Borough.

We understand that a tea-meeting is to take place at the Public Hall, on the 21st inst, in connection with the Wesleyan Congregation. We have received the prospectus of an "Australian Ju/enile Industrial Exhibition," which is to be opened at Ballarat on the Ist March 18-78. The committee invite contributions, from young people in all the Australian Colonies.

To-night another "great gift'distribution" will be made at the Theatre Royal, where, in addition to the ordnary items of amusement, there is to be a magic lantern exhibition. The Adelphi Music Hall is now reopened by Mr King, who has obtained a renewal of his license. Mr King has re-engaged a number of old favourites, and announces that arrangements with new talent are pending.

Messrs Morgan and Love have opened a new butchers-shop in the premises lately occupied by Mr E. Anchor They advertise an attractive list of 'small goods." ■Twenty first-class " navvies" are required. Applications to be made either at the Brian Boru, Kumara,. or at Messrs Butler and O'Conor's, Greymouth.

The usual Church of England services will be conducted to-morrow evening by the Revd. H. J. C. Gilbert, at the Theatre Royal. Mr Fitall will preach, to-morrow eyeuing, at the Public Hall. The service (Presbyterian) will commence at seven o'clock.

Davidson and Co., of the Berlin House, are determined to maintain their reputation for selling their immense assorted stock of general drapery, clothing, &c M at prices' that apparently defy competition. Under the auspices of the Mayor and Council of Hokitika, a petition for a bridge over the Teremakau has been prepared, and is being, numerously signed by the ratepayers. The plesant pastime of sliding on the ice could be enjoyed yesterday morning on a drain by the side of the road near Goldsborough. The Governor has withdrawn from the Westland Gold-field five acres,-.being section 158 (in red) situated, in the Arahura District, near the junction of the Greenstone and Warden's roads,, and reserved the same for General Government buildings. A telegram leaving Wellington at ten minutes to two p.m. on Thursday reached Kumara at a quater past five. Another leaving Wellington at twenty minutes past twelve p.m. on the same day reached Kumara at ten minutes past three. The first named concained 139 and the other 303 words. Telegrams are expensive luxuries for newspapers and have to be paid for in cash. Here we have some 442 words'to pay for and they are absolutely worthless, in consequence of their late delivery rendering the publication on the day of their airrival impossible. At Hokitika this morning, about half past four, a small cottage, in north Revel 1-street, occupied by a blacksmith named Andrews, was destroyed by fire. Mrs Andrews and one of her children were much burnt, aud the child is not expected to live.

The receipte of the Greymouth and Kumara Tramway for the four weeks endiug July 22ud amounted to £517 lis 6d, comprising the following items :—Passengers, £216 17s; goods. £3OO 14s 6d.

The Kumara Volunteer Fire Brigade, applied yesterday to Mr Warden Price, for permission to erect a temporary bell-tower, between Spirideler's Hotel and the Empire. The Warden has referred the Brigade to the Municipal Authorities who are shortly to be elected.
