We shall publish, the Financial Statement as a supplement to tomorrow’s Kumara Times. The meeting to discuss the “ Local Option Bill,” will be held at 8 o’clock this evening at the Public Hall, Mainstreet. To-morrow evening, at 7 o’clock, a meeting of those ihterested in the formation of a Co-operative Brewing Company .in Kizniara will be held at HaUna’k Victoria HoteL^Seddoh-sfeeet. In a “ local,”' appearing in the Ku' mara Times of 30 th nit, it was stated that any peirson wishing to take up a section , in the Township for another year could do so under a “ License to occupy.” It should have been mentioned that the permission applies to unimproved sections only. The Temperance Times v for August has reached us. It ' contains a well written and hopeful article on the Local Option Bill, the usual information interesting to members 'of the LO.G.T, and a letter from the correspondent, from which We extract the following:—“Our petition' is in the hands of our canvasser at the present time, and from all I can hear, he is very successful so far. We purpose having a public meeting soon, to consider the Local Option Bill, and we got Mr Sandle, our District Deputy, to ask Mr Houlahan, as Chairman of the Road Board, to call the meeting and take the chair, but that gentleman entirely declined to have anything to do with it. We then asked Mr Warden Price to take the chair on the occasion; and he readily assented, as in his opinion, the present state of the law regarding licensing was very defective, and he considered that local option was the best method that had yet been proposed.” The omission of a comma in the letter of Mr Jas. Dale, anent the late concert for the Kumara Hospital Ward, made it appear that Mr S.M. George had borrowed seats from the Roman Catholic School Committee, for the use of his piano. The absurdity of such a statement, of course, must have been evident to every one. We are requested, however, to state that the charge of “£2 5s rent of piano ” appearing in the balance-sheet, is for a piano (not Mr George’s) hired for the purpose of practising upon, previous to the concert.
A remarkable instance of presence of mind occurred on the Ferry road a couple of days ago. As a lad about 15 was passing along, a fierce bulldog flew at him and fastened itself to his left arm. Finding Ire could not shake the brute off, although, suffering great pain, he succeeded in getting Ids knife from his pocket, and having with difficulty opened it, he cut the dog's throat, when it at once let go its hold and fell dead to the ground.—“ Lyttelton Times.”
