Melbourne, July 22. Parliament has been mostly engaged during the week in discussing the Railway Construction Bill, it having been decided to rush it through as speedily as possible, as the other Colonies, proceeding with contracts is taking away contractors and men.
Only one petition has, as yet, been decided bv the Election Committee, and that was in favour of the sitting member, Colonel Joseph Anderson,a Peninsula hero, aged 88. •■•■;.
Sir William" Jefvoise 'has been verv ill,-hut is now slowly recovering, though still unable to perform any dutv. '
The cable remains interrupted between Penang and Singapore. • The West Australian line is expftcted to be open for- traffic at the end of next month/"
In the libel case against the proprietor of the Police News, the jury were unable'to agree. No" date is yet fixed for she Financial Statement. It -will probably not be made until after the Railway Bill is disposed of. The iweather has -been cold, with heavy rogs. ... Markets are dull—BreadstufFa firm.
