The funeral of Messrs. Cooncy, Kiely, and Kelly, took place this morning. The coffins containing the bodies had been conveyed to St. Patrick's Church, where the Rev, Father M'Caughey said mass for the repose of their souls. After mass he preached to the congregation which filled the church, and. gave the usual '•absolutions." The bodies were afterwarda conveyed to the hearse, and a procession waß formed in Seddon-street. Hence the procession marched up the Main road, the interment having to take place at Stafford. Over a thousand people were in the procession, including those in vehicles and on horseback. The respective ages of the deceased were,—Oooney 35, Kiely 37, and Kelly 40.
Yesterday the committee appointed to canvasß for funds to bury the | victims of the late accident, were untiring in their efforts. They have reason to be well satisfied. with their success, having coU lected a very handsome amount, the most of which will be devoted to the relief of Mra Oooney.
The Chairman of the Grey County Council, has given notice of his intention to move at the next meeting of the Council:—'• That a reward of j&OO be offered for the discovery of a payable gold-field within the Grey County ; and that such sum be paid subject to such conditions as the Council should determine."
Mr Seddon has given notice that he will move, at the next meeting of the Westland County Council:—" That the conduct of M. Price, Esq., Magistrate, Warden, Licensing Officer, &c, towards members of the bar, litigants, and his subordinates, Is unbearable and tyrannical; also, that his refusal to grant rights on the Education Reserve entails loss and inconvenience, and that the Minister of Justice be asked to appoint aCommiision to inquire into these matters so universally complained of."
It is not creditable to those concerned to have it said, that men who can find money to spend in getting drunk and paying the consequent fine, when asked to take a Hospital ticket, plead that they cannot afford the money. Last night, at the Hospital meeting, it was publicly stated that this was _ too frequently the state of affairs.
The schooner Tauranga is now loading at Dimedin * for Greymouth. Persons here importing goods by her, can have them brought from Greymouth by the Tram. Arrangements can be made with Mr Duncan M'Lean, agent in K.uniara.
The Arahura Road Board hold their fortnightly meeting to-morrow afternoon, at font o'clock, at the Court House.
The banks were closed to-day, in consequence of the funeral.
A financial summoned meeting of Court Greenstone A.0.F., was held last evening at Bulstrode's Hotel, to receive thpAizltyearly balance-sheet, auditors; report, and elect office-bearers for the/ensuing term. There was a fair attendance of members. From the balance-street submitted by the permanent senary—Mr J. S. Jolly—the J Court to have made considerable progress both in finances and numerical ■strength—facts that augur well for the | future progress of Forestry in this district, and will, no doubt, be the means of inducing new members to join its ranks. The election of officers resulted in the return of Mr J. T. Foster as C.R., F, Costello S.C.R., J. Soele S.W., M. Wt'Kerfcie, J.W ; , S.B., W. Healy J. 8., J. S, Jolly, re-elected permanent secretary. Mr M". M'Kenzie was elected delegate to the next district lodge meeting. A resolution waa also carried awarding P. 0. R. Galland a past officer's certificate, and his name to be placed on the mark of resppct board for services as C.R. during the past six months. Before, the close of the Court several new members were proposed.
A public meetina of subscribers to the local Hospital Ward was hold last evening at the Cosmopolitan lintel, for the purpose of nominating candidates for the hospital snb-commiUee to hold office during the ensuing year. At the time appointed for the meeting only some hairdo zen members of the retiring committee were present. After the expiration of half an hour, on* subscriber put in an appearance, and half an hour later the attendance had increased to a dozen. Mr Aacher was moved to the chair, and, in
the absence of Mr Dungan, who was imperatively engaged at another meeting, received the nominations. The following, gentlemen were nominated, and did not decline to act : —Messrs Mc'Gregor, Riley Plunket, Wylde, Stewart, Dungan, Garguilo, Anchor, Hanna, Reynolds, Bird, Barrowman and Keenan. Several of the retiring committee refused to allow themselves to be nominated, as they were so disheartened at the manifest indifference of the public in the matter of Hospital accommodation. The proceedings terminated with a vote of thanks to the chairman. Sir Julius Vogel has asked the Govern* ment for instructions as to the members of female, nurses which may be required for all New Zealand hospitals under the Nightingale system. The telegram has, been referred to the Hospital Burgeons in the different districts for report.
