MINING REPORT.
The past week has not , been without its rush, though the rush is not one of any great magnitude. ■ The.site of it is On the Shallow Lead, near the Mainroad, Here a number of claims have been marked off, and shafts are being sunk, but have not yet been bottomed. The Push 'was ■ caused by a neighbouring claim turning out -well. On Wednesday .last, .'another claim, Mansfield’s, on the, flat near the Waimea Race bottomed, and got good prospects. One claim on this flat is, we - are told, doing extreuiely , well At the Larrikins a good deal of work - has' been done in preparation for the coming in. of the race. The fluining to connect this 1 portion of the field with the Kapitea Creek has been begun, and will be finished about the end of the next week. More flumlng is being made at Barker’s. On the f Shamrock ' Lead, the • miners will haze plenty of work for the Government Race, but complain of the price that is to be charged them for ground si uicing. The charge they say is to be. £i 10s, per Government head of water, per week. As each claim will require from four to eight heads per week, they say they will be unable to work at sufficient, if any, remuneration. Prom the other side of the Teremakau nothing new can be reported. Those who are on gold at Murphy’s Rush are still fairly satisfied with the amount of returns, but the sinking is very deep, 1 and there is not ranch w;ater. A race is in course of being surveyed for this rush. In the flat just behind the blacksmith’s-we hear that a grain and a half to the dish has been obtained, from the surface. The amount of gold brought in for sale Saturday was above the average, during the week not ranch has been offered. Saturday evening seems, to be generally adopted by the miners as the best time for disposing of the product of their labour, and the banks appear to be kept pretty busy during the. .last few hours of each week. We hear that Smith the prospector, is now engaged in exploring the country on this side of the Loopline Road. He is testing the ground, about half-way between Stanton’s and the Christchurch Road.
