THE FATE OF TURKEY, OR ENGLAND NOT TO THE RESCUE.
Again the horrid sound of war Is wafted on the evening breeze ; Again the trumpets' call to arms Makes Europe's Monarchs ill at ease. The Turk and Russ, with frantic zeal Meet, and their deadly weapons wield. Once more for trifles light as air, A gallant nation's fate is sealed. The key of Europe now must fall, The " Sickman" trembles, well he may ! Oh Sultan, where's thy foreign aid, Thy boasting friendß, now where are they? Too many French and Germans have Of late been laid in soldier's grave; Those nations honours won content, Neither will stretch a hand to save. And Austria, from her tow'ring heights, Serenely views the troubled sea ; Mild Joseph, scales in hand, now weighs His chance of death or victory. But where is haughty England now ? Where are her knights of chivalry; Whose boast erewhile was ever this, " Our blood and treasure make men free?" What worth is now the Saxon's vaunt Of conquests gained without a stain ? How mean's Britannia 'fore the world When Russia treats her with disdain ! Then Sultan, when the Russian hordes Encompass thee by sea and. land. When all is lost—be a Macbeth, Steel thy nerves—die sword in hand J Nospuk.
