The Kumara Hospital Ward Committee have decided upon holding a Grand Ball, -at the Theatre Royal on ,the Queen's Birth-night, for the benefit of their funds. The tickets are to be sold at a moderate price, and the Committee confidently antcipate a very largo attendance. The Concert in honour of the Primate of'New Zealand, the Right Revd. Dr. Harper, Bishop of Christchurch, promises to be a very enjoyable affair. Besides vocal and instrumental items the programme Includes an address from his Lordship. The Revd. Mr Gilbert will •occupy the chair.
The agitation in'favor of a Teremakau Bridge is increasing In strength; A preliminary meeting, preparatory to a monster meeting to be held at Kumara, was held last night and influentialy attended/
A man was brought in to the Local Hospital Ward, from the Larrikins this afternoon, suffering from a fractured leg, caused by the fall upon it of a heavy stone. His name is Alexander McLeod.
Me3sra Davidson and Co., Seddonstreet, direct attention by an advertisement in another column, to a large Btock of autumn and winter drapery, clothing, &c, which have been specially selected for the requirements of this district. ' We are requested to notify that the drawing of the Art Union for the Hokitika Hospital will positively take place on Wednesday, 9th instant. Mr W. R. Goodrick has been authorised to collect all monies for the same. A few tickets remaining unsold can be obtained at this office up to Saturday next.
The Committee of the County Council, which is appointed to consider the claims of those who first made public the Gold discoveries at Kumara, will sit to-morrow at the Court House, Kumara, to hear the several claimants. The sitting commences at 2 o'clock.
The Arahura Road Board met to-day, shortly after noon. A report of proceedings is held over till to-morrow, in consequence of pressure ;on our space. ' Our telegrams give Mr Gisborne, so far as at present known, a majority over his opponents of twenty eight. The Tramway from Greymouth will be opened for traffic to-morrow. The time table appears in another column.
