KUMARA HOSPITAL AND REPRESENTATIVES.
[to the editor.] Sir, —Allow me to draw particular attention to the conduct of two of our District Members in the County Council, when the subject of Hospital subsidies was dealt with. Mr Seddon conveniently absents himself, and Mr Beale votes against a subsidy for Kumara ; and this is the way one of the most vital interests, as affects the mining population of this goldfield, is treated. And here stand a chosen two, who by their conduct and action in a manner most direct, help to defeat the obtaining of a much needed subsidy for a local want. From one end of the district to the other the feeling is widespread. The opinion is incontrovertable that a local ward for it is indispensable, and yet, when there is a legitimate opportunity offering itself for securing a little money on its behalf, Mr Seddon and Mr Beale, who to the last should stand up in its defence—what do ,we find,? That both are found acting with those persons determined not to advance one farthing to the district. Will the people, will the mining population for once, open their ayes to the transparent hypocrisy that continually repeals itself in the public utterances and acts of some of our local M.C.O.’s? Have not these men publicly stated that the crying wants of our local Hospital Ward should have their strongest advocacy at all times? And as a satisfactory result, .the cloven foot has shown itself. Yes, they have done injury to one of the most important matters that concern our mining community, and they have done it to insult and damage both the people's wishes and wants on our goldfield, and just, forsooth, to please a sham of public opinion in Hokitika. We shall see if these gentlemen- are to treat the interests of this district as they think fit. All credit is due to Mr MWhirter for the energetic manner in which he upheld a just and essential claim for our goldfield.
I am, &c. Observer.
