But of la'o we have received i by po-t 1 ‘ttcr.q containing questions of a character that we deem personal (alh ugh no names are mentioned) and, : wE-it is worse, libell us. As the - ..itlkr has no desire to add a verdict lib d t) its present long list of tribulations the manuscripts have been deslroyi d to seve any possible trouble.
I A rather well educated Maoii came [ to this office the other d ty with a noi fice to clear noxious weeds that he had : just received, and therein was an inrimation that ho was expected to clear |“h ikna" from bis land. During the week Messrs Morgan and Newton crossed by pontoon a mob of sheep for Messrs K rf and Tt»sar-g», which will be on Tuharoa, and 150 for Mr Goddard, (£ Kinohaku.
In another column’ Messrs Jonathan Ltd j o’ify that they hold the agency for Gibbons find Co.’e celebrated grass and other seeds. In a few days full jam plea will be on view—not in small packets but in bags. The Raglan Chroi : cle announces the sale (through th ar/ency of Mr A. R. Amongst the visit.):'= to Kawhia at present is Mr Gibb, m • of the Government Bee Experts and Inspectors. In conversation with ou' representative Air Gibb expressed bis delight at the i fact that this and the Raglan district ' were so free from diaea e.
A very enjoyable an, prise party was held at Te Malka on Monday night when at the invitatio : <,f Mrs Chase about 20 Kawbiaites j rneyed thereto to honour Mr and ,£rs Robinson. The trip was made in Mr Berg’s launch, and on arrivr.' there music, dancing, etc., was indulged in and supper partaken of. The Combined Farmers* Union Pic-
nic will b© held on Saturday, March 20’b at Awaroa, when i big attendance and an enjoyable gathering is anticipated. Visitors are expected to bring some refreshments with them, but tea will be provided. It ig probable thatthe Hon. Mr Hogg will ba present, besides other members of Parliament.
An amusing episode took place at the Grisborne Police Court on Monday. A Maori, who was fined for assaulting a Chinaman, dpclioed to pay the fine, and a warrant was accordingly made out for his commitment to prison. There baing iio police constable present to take the man into cu .ody, the Utter Amdsrt.iok to convey the warrant In person to the gaoler, an 1 hurried away to prison, remarking that he hoped he would be in time for diner.
Ratepayers, both m the County Council and Town Board, are reminded that- within a few days i penalty of 10 per cent, will be added to all unpaid rates. The last county elections conclusively proved the fallacy of nos paying rates and everyone :aid f th&t next year they would see that they had a vote. Since then, however, the excitement has subsided, with the rasult that unless some of the ratepayers pay up they will be again disfrancised. Whether they are or oct lies entirely in their own bands.
The question of the erection of the sale yards at Te Rau-a-moa still kings fire, although those most interested, the settlers, are very keen on the matter. W© hear that the Farmers’ Auctioneering Co. has been approached, but that that body thought it was “too early ” (the talk that has kept tne Kawhia district back far t o long already). Another firmjnst starting in the Waikato is now to be appmehed, and it U hoped with success. If not those interested aae likely to eteot co-operative yards. ' .
It is stated that l;hn Government huve acquired over 15,000 acres of the Moerangi block, and have also purchased large interests in Taumatatotara and other native bbeks. That is partioul irly good news, but we want something more than that. We warit tliose lands surveyed, roaded, opened up and the settlers tuer-v. Then, and only then, will we reerzdise the good work of the Government that is being lauded so by p rty papers whose writers know nothing of —and wo fear never will—the greatist curse New Zealand has,'that of the native land.
In response to the invitation issued by Mr and Mrs Berg, semr.. there was a large attendance in Hcott’s Hall on Tuesday night last, tbo ooeftgion being the 21st birthday of their youngest son Chris. Foe the Occasion the htUi was tastefully decorated, whilst the floor vas in excellent order—in fict it was too good. A splendid supper was provided, and deftly bairdM round by the members of tbo Borg family. Mrs ('•base provided the music in her wellknown able manner, the duties of M.C I-dug performed by Mr After rtipper Dr Jenkins returned thanks on behalf of tbo host and host ess for the <.Gi nduno of so many friends that evmii sg up i the oeoaaiou of such an important event. “ For He’s a Jolly G »od Fellow " was heart ily ung, lusty cheers being given for Mr and Mrs Bt?rg.
