The Holidays.

As (ar as this district was concerned tbs Christmas and New Year holidays passed off very quietly. On Christmas Eye the town was fairly busy, a good number of people from tbe outlying districts being not-

tceauie. TUe storekeepers report that business was brisk. In Scott’s Hall a Childrens’ Party and Christmas Tree (originated by Mrs Ashford) was held, and the juveniles had a particularly happy time. The tree was laden with toys, etc.—which had been donated by several friends—each child receiving a present. Tea was served, after which a programme of dialogues, songs and gramaphone selections was gone through, and between items gafoes indulged in. Christmas Day was spent in the usual manner. In the evening a service ww held in the Congregational Church, but the attendance was poor owing to the heavy rain. The Rev. D. B. Ashford preached a seasonable, FHrmoD, Mrs Ashford and Mr Durban? rendering snloa. Boxing Day was fine, consequently a large number journeyed to Awaroa to be present at the sports, whilst a few residents attended the Pirongia Races.

As Te Maika, on tbe 28th lust., there was a race meeting/ the attendance being large and the sport good. Willison’s Kaware won tbe Cup and T&maranga’s Business a couple of rao'?s. In the evening tbe new public hall at Kinohaku was opened, a ball being held at which there was a record

number of people present* The music wan supplied by Mesdames Langley and Chase, Messrs Gordon and Neely being M’s.C. The hall measures 40ft. x 28(t. and has been erected by Mr J. lE. Scott. The cost of the building is being borne by public subscription. A number of Kawhia people attended the Marokopa Sports and Races on January Ist and 2nd.
