The residents of Te Maika have de cided to hold races on the 28th inst., for which splendid prizes will be given. Thare are not many people leaving Kawhia for Christmas—that is judging by the many holiday “ hampers ” arriving. We acknowledge the receipt of an almanac for 1909 from Mr J, K. Newton, local agent for the South British Insurance Co. Last Saturday night thare was an enjoyable impromptu dance*in Sc it ' Ha’l, Kawhia, the music for which was supplied by Mrs Langley. It is xumoured that a three days ricratta will ba held nt Kawhia in Mty nr June. The arrangementa are in good bands and a record success is anticipated z On Boxing Day, 26th inst., sports will be held al Awaroa, when a good days’ fun is expected. The programme is varied and the prize* good. Details will be f und in an advertisement on our third page. The exports by the s.s. Waitangi on Thursday last included 50 fat lambs, shipped by Mr F. A. Pearson, of Awaroa, and 25 boxes of butter from the Kawbia Butter Factory. The s.s. Waiotahi is to undergo extensive alterations before taking up the running on the West Coast. At present a new fo’castle head is put on the steamer. In the Kiwhia Congregational Church on Christmas night, at 7.80 p.m , there will be a special musical service, at which the Rev. D. B. Ashwill preach a short advent sermon.

The Kawbia Public School “ broke up ” on Wednesday for the usual holidays, which w>H last about seven weeks. The annual school pietflc will be held early in the New Year.

Word was received here lust week that another poll for the Western Maori member would have to be taken. On what grounds was not stated. So far we have not received verification of the statement.

Mr J. E. Scott is making good pro grass with the erection of the Kmobaku Hall, which (an advertisement announces in this issue) is to be opened on the night of December 28th, when a grand ball will be held. According to a letter received by Mr Langley the poles for. the Kino* baku-Marokopa telephone line bave been ordered and should be landed shortly. The communication ;’s from Mr J. K. Logan, Inspector of Telegraphs. There was great interest taken in Kawbia in the race for the sculling championship of the world won by Arnst at Wanganui on Tuesday. A resident (who always backs Australia) was very pleased with tbe result, as he won a whole 6s on tbe race !

What about cups and saucers, tea plates, batter dishes, sugar basius, c»ke dishes, dinner ware, toilet sets, candlesticks, linoleum, curtains, quilts, art. muslins, cretonnes. Well where oan we procure best articles at lowest cost ? Why Jonathan’s ! Didn’t you know that ?* Tbe waather during the week just could hardly be termed seasonable. On Wednesday a severe southerly gale raged and tbe s.s. Waitangi had a very rough trip round from Raglan, which took 31 hours to accomplish. The harbour was so rough that tbe mail launches to Kinobaku and Te Maika could not battle against it, tbe mails not being delivered until the following day.

On Wednesday night last the scr>W Kia Ora was wrecked on Kawau Island and three lives lost. The name appears to be quite an ill-fated one in marine circles, as the wreck of the s.s. Kia Ora on Tiru* Point in June of last year is still fresh ou tbe minds of people in this district. Although kia ora is the Maori for good luck it does not appear to bring favours of fortune to the vessels upon which it is bestowed.

At the last sitting of the S.M. Court at Kawhia, a Maori named Kanawa was proceeded against for not registering his dog, and was ordered to du so, and also pay a fine of ss, with £1 5s costs. Tbe order was ignored, consequently a warrant was issued fat his arrest, which Constable M’Curtby executed on Monday last, Kanawa being lodged in the local lock up, awaiting tbe arrival of the steamer to convey him to Mount Eden. However, on Wednesday Tai and Marea paid tbe amount due and the ill advised culprit was released from custody. Kanawa was well able to pay but; would not. He said he had nothing, as all his land, stock, etc., bad been made over to King Mahuta, who, he argued, should have paid. Another example of tbe “ poor, unsophisticated Maori," who has to be protected ; but when it comes to a deal it ie usually tbe Pakeba who needs protection.

> Ladies’ companions, needle oases, indketchief and glove boxes, writing cases, gents’ dressing case*, pocket books 1909 diaries, vases, photo, frames, Xmas, and New Year cards, toys, dolls, etc., etc., and just the va>y article for large, big and small. Where? Jonathan’s of course/'

Intending candi lates are reminded that nominations for the County Council diction clow on Thursday next at noon. Ce Babbage announces else where th it ho will contest tbe Awaroa Riding. Wo learn that Mr T. B. Scn’t has definitely decided not to stand f r Mitakowhai. in the other outlying riding* matters remain as previously stated. It is not yet openly announced whether Mr F. De rec >urt will enter the lists for Kawbia, but tbere &re one or two voters who think he would represent the riding'well, but the opinions by no means universal. However, it would be no surp-ise to us to find that the nomination has been lodged.
