Kawhia Town Board.

An ordinary meeting of tbe above body was held in Mr Newton’s Office on Tuesday last, there being present— Crs Jonathan (chairman), W. Morgan, F. Newton and Petrit.

From Cr Jenkins, applying for leave of absence.—Granted. From Hunter and Ward, Kiwbin. formally asking permission to 1 iy pipvr "acrojs Jervois street.—Tut; sc i n i tbe chairman in granting the roquet was endorsed.

From Under Secretary for Lande, stating that section 4, block VIII, Kawhia township, had been reserved as a site for tbe erection of Government buildings.—The Chairman suggested that the Board should apply to have the section vested in it.— Or Newton : I think that buildings are to be erected very soon.—Received. From W. W. Davies, Oparau, ob jeering th paying rates on the swamp, as the title was not complete,—To be informed that the Valuation Department compiled the roil. From W. Swanson, junr., Auckland, objecting to being charged for arrears of Tates.—Attended to.

i From Valuer General, Wellington, applying for copy of the balance sheet so as tbe amount of subsidy payable could be adjusted.— The Clerk said that such bad been done, but no further c> mmunication had been received. —lu reply to Cr Pettit, the Clerk said that last year the rates collected totalled £BB 16s, upon which sum the subsidy amounted to about £l6. —Or Pettit thought that the Department should be stirred up.—The Clerk was instructed to write. THB THREE PESOS BATK. A letter was read from Mr T. D. Hamilton, forwarding copy oil resolutions passed at a recent meeting of townspeople. A legal opinion from Mr Gillies, as to the powers of tb-j B >ard relative to reducing or not collecting tba rate was also read. The letter stated that neither course could be adopted. The following motion was carried on the motion of Crs Pettit aud Morgan: —“ That a copy of tbo advice relative to rating received from Mr EL T. Gillies ba forwarded to Mr A. E. Lang ley as representing those pr isent at a meeting of persons interested cn Thursday, September 24. h."

GENERAL. The Clerk reported that rates totalling £l6 7s had been collected. The following accounts were passed for payment:—Settler 18s, G. H. Chase 4s 9d, H. J. Falwasser £2 10?, J. K. Newton £2 10s. In reply to Cr Morgan, the Chairman said that Messrs Hunter and Ward had not been given the sole right to take water from tbe town well, which was still available to tbe public. Cr Newton remarked that the bill approaching Leitbardt street; required repairing, whilst Cr Pettit adv ext-d tbe forming of a footpath along Pouwere Street as far as the Congregational Church.—The Chairman stated that both these works were in the loan raised by the County Council, which it was hoped would soon be available for expenditure.

DOMAIN BOARD. The members then sat as a Domain Board. The Under-Secretary for Lauds forwarded a tracing of three acres of the swamp, which would be added to the Domain. (The area is situated immediately behind Mr Buckeridge'ei residence). Lt was agreed that it was useless discussing how to improve this piece until tbe swamp was drained. The Clerk was instructed to write to Messrs M‘Cardle, M.L.C., Jennings and Greeuslade, M’s.P., thanking them for tbe interest they had taksn in this matter.
