Mr Frank Cowern has commenced business as saddler in one of Mr Mason’s shops on the Kawhia beach. Monday, November 9th (Kings Birthday) will bo observed as a holiday at the local post ofiico. Mails for Auckland, Pirongia, Ta Ran a.moa and Oparau will ba closed on Saturday November 7tb, at 9 p.m. Wednesday is election day, and all information relative thereto can be gleaned from an advertisement in another column.

Claymore arrived on Tuesday last with a big cargo, the steamer being fully laden. There were 47 tons (or Kawhia and 58 for Raglan. The Rev. R. A. M om.ld, of St. Peter’s Church of Eng. d, Hamilton, paid a short visit to Ka whia during the week. We learn that the public hall at Marokopa is to be 40f by 24ft, and will be opened before Christmas. The cost has been subscribed by the settlers. Mr Taft has been eieoted President of the United states by a huge majority—even greater than when President Roosevelt was elected.
At 2 o’clock on Monday next, November 6th (King’s Birthday) tfao Kawbia Harbour Lawn Tennis Club will open the courts for the season, to which the public are cordially invited We learn that Mr H. D. Coutts, Government Valuator, seriously injur etl bis horse, (a valuable animal) owing to the bad tracks in the Taharoa Riding, which he declares to be the worst he has ever travelled over. The decisions in the cases of Whitcombe v. Willison and. tbo Kiritehere Road oases, heard before Mr Cutten, 8.M., at Kawhia last Wednesday and Thursday, will be given at Hamilton, on Monday, November 18th. To-morrow (Saturday) the Kawhia County Council Tneet. Afterwards, at 7.30 p.m., there will bo a “tangi”—a word we have borrowed for the oooa aion from the Opposition party—at which regrets and in some oases goodbyes will be expressed. There have been a large number of fish caught off the Kawhia wharf lately, principally Conga eels and schnapper, but on Monday Mr Wiley booked, and successfully landed, a shark which was over five feet in length. Rather bad news now that the bathing season is d awing so near. The tennis season was opened in Kawhia on Wednesday lest, when Mr and Mrs Newton had a party on their priI vute lawn, which was attended by about 20 enthusiasts and friends. Good games were indulged in, and afternoon tea partaken of, the gathering being greatly enjoyed by all present.
A cricket practice was indulged in by local players on Wednesday afternoon. On Saturday, 14th inst, a match will be played between Kawhia and Kinohaku, on the ground of the former. The game has been arranged by Mr Chase, who will provids lunch, afternoon tea. and a dinner (or the teams tn Scott’s hall at 6 p.m. sharp, Afterwards a dance will be held in aid of Cottage Hospital Fund, for which the admission will be gents Is, ladies free.
The Kawhia Town Board hold a meeting on Tuesday, lOib inst,, when the following notice of motion, given by Dr Jenkins, will be discussed: “That the minute ot the Sth September, 1908, striking a rate of 3d in the £, be recinded. In the event of this being contaary to law, I propose that only one-half of the amount be collected and any amount that may have been collected be either refunded or placed to the credit of the payors for the next year.”
Mr Bowater, Opposition candidate for tbe Taumarunui electorate, has been bolding good mee ings in the Waimarinu district. Speaking at Ohukuue be said he favoured the con slKuojon of lines to Rietabi and Kawhia, which would act as gopd feeders for the Main Trunk. During his address at Raetihi tbe candidate mentioned the Kawhia-Te Kuiti proposed line, which would serve a largo area of country adjacent to the Main Trunk Line, Kawbia being possessed of a splendid harbour. On Sunday last a memorial service to tbo memory of the late Rev. C. E Davidson was held In the Kawhia Congregational Church, when there was a large congregati >u. Tbe Rev. D. B. Ashford occupied the pulpit, and in the prayers and sermon paid high tribute to the departed one. The pul pit was draped in black, relieved with white flowers. Mrs Obhse presided at the organ, playing “Nearer My G id tn Thee”, “He Wipes » Tear From Every Eye,” and, at tho cooolueim of service whilst those pre cub stood, the “Dead March iff Saul.”
An amusing iucideub was witnessed in Featherston on Saturday at a furniture sale. A largo mirror bad been placed outside tbo building where the sate was to bo held, and attracted the notice of a g ams rooster, which was strutting about. The warlike bird pre senily caug it sight of bis reflection in tbo glass and promptly gave battle. He fought the mirror off and on for about tbr e bour«, at tbe end »( which time his c >mb was bleeding, and bis feathers tou/lud as if he bad been engaged in a genuine battle. Occasionally he would lose sight of his enemy and would rush behind the glass to find whore he was hiding. Failing to discover him, he would start a crow of victory, and again citcLiiag sight of his reflection, would at once renew hostilities.
Go Saturday night last an impromptu danca was held in Scott's Hall, at which about 20 couples were present. Mr* Chase provided the music, and Mr C. Brn-g officiated as M Q. For the second week in succession this district has missed its Auckland mail owing to tbe s.s. Waitangi going into Raglan and geUing bar bound there. Tbe inconvenience is partiou lady annoying, and it is time the postal authorities ceased sending tbe Kawhiamail via Onehungaand Raglan Mr Heywond Armstrong, of Oparau, had a narrow escape from being dangerously injured on Thursday last. He was working at bis sawmill when an apron he was wearing b came entangled m some of the machinery. The clothes were stripped fr >m Mr Armstrong and he was hurie-1 about with great violence. Fortunately the engine was only going elow, and being quickly topped the sufferer was attended to. Mr Armstrong came to Kafrbia this (Friday) afternoon and was examined by Dr 0. Campbell Jenkins, who found that although no bones were broken a severe shaking and braising was received. That the injuries were not more serious is marvellous.
