There will be * busy lime for Mr Bathe and bis start of mad inspectors very ehorily as the authorisation for a la-ge amount of the moneys placed on , the estimates are now to hand, and at prfcsr-.nt several eon tracts are being prepared. We learn, that there is again a .-carcity of good men to carry out i the works.

I .ii slated on good authority that an .igitslion is being made at Ruapuke v ; i an idea of portion of that district b.ing severed from the Riglan County ; and placed in the Kawbia County. Tin* reason given is that the settlers .th r -eo great pos’ibilities of using ilb Antea Hirbour for importing and ' csp -rtibg iheir goods. We wonder is the excuse correct.

At the Council meeting on Munday last a notice was read declaring that the African box thorn had been declared a noxious weed.- One of the e iuncillors asked what the weed was, and Ur Jonathan, leaving the office, produced a piece of thorn which be took from the section upon which the I office is built. The hedge is growing here in r r< fusion, and it people to keep it in check. The machinery in the new Kawhia Butter Factory was set in motion on Wednesday last, everything working very smoothly. Cream is to be received on the first of next month, and we hope to see before long the product b anded “Kawhia” (which is the registered brand) sent fv- m this port in large quantities, and establish a name for excellence of qualrty on the Home market. If the supply of cream is forthcoming, no doubt th* wish above expressed will be gratifi d. Last Saturday, at Kauroa, near Raglan, I ho first sheep dog trial, undur the auspices of the local A. and P Association was held, the event passing off very successfully. The Kawhia district was represented by Mr Macalis ter, of Kawaroa, who took over a couple of dogs. Messrs V. Chitty and Thompson were the but the decision is not yet known here, though, according to goo I authorities, it is considered the Kawaroa dogs will be easily first. Inspector B nnel, of the Health Department paid ft visit to Kawbia on Tuesday, and the following day toured the town. We believe that Mr Bennet was not satisfied altogether with the conditions prevailing at a few places, and probably a warning will be given. On Wednesday evening he delivered a lecture on “Health” in Scott’s hall, the attendance at which was not very large. The address proved interesting and instructive and at the conclusion a vote cf thanks was accorded on the proposition of Mr Pettit. Or Jonathan, Chairman of the Kawhia Town Board (at whose instigation the visit was arranged) was chairman. As the time for the elections for the Kawhia County Council draws near the excitement is getting greater, and before the day arrives it is predicted that it will be up to fever heat. At Kinohakn more than ordinary interest is being displayed, and already there have been.one or two wordy warfares over the merits of the respective candidates. Mr Haylock is to oppose Chairman Shaw for the Waiharakeke seat. Taharoa has a number of alleged candidates, but we believe that the contest will be between Messrs J. Kearns and J. P. Wright, the latter announcing himself in this issue, and we believe, being the nominee of. a meeting held’on Tuesday. ForMatakowhai Messrs R. Davies and Elliott are the Oparau candidrtes so far, but we predict that these will not be the only nominations for that place, and would venture the opinion tnnt before election day there will be at least another two seeking the votes of their fellow ratepayers. Cr Norton is again going for the Te Mata end, and is justly deserving of being returned, as every fairminded person must admit that the 20 odd ratepayers there are worthy of representation. No doubt Crs Jonathan and Babbage will bs returned unopposed for the Kawhia and Awaroa ridings respectively, and Mr Jas. Noonan for Te Kaurj. Nominations close on November sth and the election takes place on the 11th.
