Kawhia Harbour Railway.
We are informed that quite recently one of the Wellington papers con tai nail the information that the Kawhia Harbour*Main Trunk line would be the firiit of the trirl surveys undertaken.
At the meeting of the Kawhia County Council on Monday last, Cr Babbage moved: “That the Government be thunjked for mentioning the survey of the Kawbia Harbour Bailway in tbe Public Works statement, and that a letter be forwarded a-king that the work bo put in hand wp.buut delay.”— Or Jonathan seconded the motion which was carried unanimously. Quite right; keep on pegging away all wbo have the interests of the district at heart.
In an editorial on the estimates the Ragtan Chronicle says : “It is gratifying, too, to find that the Statement promises a trial survey with a view to railway communication between Kawhia and the Main Trunk Line, for though Raglan is not men tioned in this connection, this district’s claims for inclusion in the scheme will require to be considered when tbe time arrives for deciding the route of the proposed railroad. With demands for tbe construction of railways from so many parts of tbe Dominion, the line in question is scarcely likely to be Recorded any priority of authorisation, and some years may yet elapse before events at Wellington herald the early advent of tbe “iron horse” to either Ritglau or Kawhia; but it is not pre mature to establish a local Railway League to watch and further this district’s interests, as has been done at Kawhia and elsewhere. We keep this subject before our readers because iu tbe past tbe adoption of a “laissez faire”.policy has been anything but profitable to Raglan, and present day usages point to tbe conclusion that in ths matter of this proposed railway extension to tbe west coast, Kawhia's clamour may possibly score more points than Raglan’s silence. 1 ’
