On Saturday last, at Kawhia, a foo'hai) match was played between Mdfok ‘pi» and Kawhia and Oparau combin' d, and after a splendid game •he fi >' iiHtnwtl lean won by 9 pointe to eight. Thcr- were only five candidates nominnt* d for ibo Kawhia Town Board, viz, Dr J-nkiu-, Messrs Walter Morgan, F. Newton, Jonathan and Per I', who have therefore been elected unopposed.

The Collage Hospital fund, was' again augnmeuted on Saturday night last, when another impromptu dance was hell, the attendance being very guod. Mesdames Chase and Lmgley provided the music, Miss G. Cowell proving a moat efficient M.Q. ElecHuu matters for the County Council are being talked about very considerably, more especially in the bark portions of the district. The first to advertise their candidature are Mcfsss 0. Haylock and F. C. Derecour , who in this issue'announce that thiit tiu-y will contest the Waiharok' ke aid fabaroa ridings respectively.

M.ssrrt Sadler, Snell (Msrofcops) and J. Piirkinson (Te Rau-a mos) »ihi< lately ruet '.lth accidents whilst u 1 u’susjr, in each the injury in- :' to >lie foot. The ialtvr’e e<se \*.hv the most serious, and in conee-qu'-rcu thereof he wm taken to the Hamilton Hospital where it was foued t.r< < t-tai y (■» atn-palate the second toe. Remember the Fancy Dresa Carnival early in October. Attention is called to the new pro perties in Messrs Falwasser au Peitit’s list on our third page. For the forthcoming milking season the Teßau a-moi Dairy Company bavo a guarantee of oyer 300 cows. On our back page will be found a eolumn of news from our Awaroa, Kiritebere and Oparau correspondents. On Friday tight last a most enjoyable “aarpristf parfy” was bd.l at Hie residebda of ’Sir M* lu in b, >» t O p»ra u, a large number attending, and a happy time being spent.

The County election cornea on agaio in November. A Ratepayers Club has been f armed. Oparm intends to do the business properly Other local centre? should copy us.—Oparau Cor respondent. Messrs Jones Bros, of Eltbam, who have a large area on the Marokopa River leased from the natives, have also leased the late Mr Magnus Forbe’s section, which adjoins their present holding. The first mooting o|! tba newly-for-med Oparaa Ratepayers* Association, was held on Saturday last, the attendance being very satisfactory. The selection of a candidate fur thu Mafakowhai Riding of the County Council was discussed, but no decision arrived nt, so tbe cvndidates are to be balloted for.

In the report of the Survey Department, in speaking of ibe field-work proposed for 1908 -9, it is stated that there will be areas in tbe Kawhia, Waitomo and Awakino Counties which will require to be sub divided, but details cannot be given, as tbe purchase of all tbe areas have not been finally c impleted.

From tbe Sxttler Office we noticed the other day an energetic man measuring the rise and fall uf the tide at the wharf. We have seen on all other wharves, except Kawhia’s tide guage. What about erecting one here ? It only costs say 5s and would be a scientific ornament, not to mention that it would be an easy way of settling bets. •‘There is top much gaudiness and striving after effect among young girls now-a-days,” said Mr Kettle, 8.M., at the Police Court at Auckland on Monday. “I believe it would be a very good thing for girls if it were tnade compulsory that they should wear simple dress—no matter Uo what class they belong. There is too much devotion to dress altogether. Tbe Native Minister has informed Mr Jennings that steps are being taken by his Department to have Otoroh&nga, Kawhia and othur Native townships brought undes tbe operations of the Native Townships Local Government Bill, 1905. When these townships are constituted under this Act they will be able to take advantage of the Loans to Local Bodies Act.]

We have been handed one of the medals struck off for distribution amongst the children attending tbe various schools in commeration of the metamorphosis of the colony. On tbe obverse side is a likeness of King Edward, while the reverse side beat!, the inscription: "Presented, to the ehil* dreu attending the schools of tbe Dominion. New Zealand proclaimed a Dominion, September 26ib, 1907.' f

The work of erecting the Kawhia Butter Factory is going on very satisfactorily, and the proprietors anticipate that everything will be completed before October Ist, upon which Jate cream will be received. The foundations of the wails ate being concreted, whilst tbe floor ?vill be put down in a like manner. Messrs Hunter and Ward are energetically working, whilst Mr Stead man is doing the bricklaying, and Mr P. Ward tbe carpentering.

At a meeting of settlers held at Miroahuiao on September 6th, railway matters were discussed at some length (says the King Country Chronicle.) A proposal which found considerable support was to the effect that the deviation of tbe Ongarue-Stratford line through the Waitewhenua to Te Kuiti should be advocated by all settlers through to Kawhia, and in return for Kawbia support local residents should support tbeconstruction of aline from Te Kuiti to Kawhia yia Miroabuiao.

Interesting and successful experiments (says the “Journal of Agriculture” of 8.A.) have been recently carried out in tbe Wooluncunga r fains, near Pt. Augusta, in country previously considered worthless owing to the drift sand. It comprises an area about 20 miles long by seven wide. Tbe method followed has been to plough the land roughly with a 5-furrow plough, dropping out two of the furrows, and then sow with Wheat, leaving tbe wind to do the harrowing. Tbe result was a crop of wheat last year standing about 2ft Gin high, and saltbush also sprung up with the wheat. It Is proposed to let the present crop saw itself and then tie land for grazing.

A ca«e of croohy to animals has (says tho Wanganui Herald) been brought nuder our notice. Owing to thorough weather tbe steamer Rimu han been unable to get away with sheep for Kawhia, and the animals have been left exposed to the weather in tbe muddy yards at tin cattle wharf —whose condition is anything but creditable to the responsible authorities. This, however, is uot the worst feature, for the ewes in many cases, have been giving birth to lambs, which b«vo no chance iu the mud, let alone in tbe crowded state of the yards, and have pimply been trampled to death. The ships* officers otu do nothtug in (be matter, and are very warm on the subject of ewea being shipped under •och conditions, for oven if the lambs escape death io the yards they are just •a likely to be trodden on iu the ship's hold . Something should bo done to proUcot* recurrence. v

On Wednesday (ho Taranaki repre sentativo footballers defeated Otago by 11 points to ninßfr after a ding-dong game. Dominion day will be celebrated by ovory school in the Colony on Saturday, October 26tb, when the children will salute the flag and have tho medals, struck in commeration of the event, presented to them. We draw attention to an inportant advertisement calling a meeting of Kawhia ratepayers for Thursday next. The fe»‘ in a thn» things ore not as they should b« has exited for some time in tho minds of imtopayere. Tho recently levied rate of Sd io the £ and on tbo new valuation, in addition to the rate levied by t’»e County, evidently brought matters to a head. The comparatively few within the Town District who are called on to boar the rates intend to look keenly after their interests. The Native Lwd trouble is undoubtedly the cause of tbe present agitation.
