It seem? almost infln dible, but we are assured by one resident (who is a disciple of George Washington) that the tanks at hi* bouse a'e ernniy. A severe accident befel Mr T. Ashbolt, dog tax collector for this county, at Mr E. W. Buckeridge’s residence, Aotea. about a fortnight ago. A rumour is in circulation in Auckland to the eSect that the s.s. Rothesay is to be taken from Kawhia to Auckland shortly and laid up there, the Northern S'.S. Co.’s directors ba. ing dissatisfied with the present trade and future prospects. Although the report lack* confirmation we fem« that it will prove to be true. This will be a very severe blow to the Marokopa and Kiritebere districts and the inconvenience occasioned by the removal of tbe Rothesay must he felt by a very largv2uumbft:' nf g-sttlers, sawtnillars, fiux tail levs and business people.
A very amusing dccurence is alleged to have taken place in a country church recently daring marriage service. The bride, who had -been well instructed in the church catechism, had not studied tbe marriage service very thoroughly, and when she was asked the usual question, •* Will thou have this man to be thy wedded husband ?” cat short the clergyman by saying, “ Yes, verily, and by God’s help, so I will; and I heartiy thank our Heavenly Father that He bath brought me to this state.” Various members of the bridal party then collapsed

According to last week’s Government Gazette the section that is now occupied by the police buildings (but which in reality was a municipal reserve) has now been legally exehanged for the section upon which Dr C. There must have been fully 200 people from this district iu Auckland for the Fleet celebrations, no fewer than 50 going by the s.s. Waitangi on Friday. The first to return came by the same boat on Wednesday. Both trips were made in fine weather and were very enjoyable, the passengers speaking in tbe highest terms of the courtesy and attention of Giptain Stephenson, his officers and crew. A young man went to Scotland, and wishing to let a friend know of bis safe arrival entered a post office and enquired if he could send a telegram direct to London and how long it would take. The official, a young lady, out short his enquiries with, " I am flot paid to answer silly questions.” Imagine her feeling*, however, when sbe found herself compelled to wire the following, “ Arrived safe. Girls here ugly and bad tempered."
For some reason or other the Auckland mail did not reach Kawhia by the overland route, and will probably be brought by th? e.«. Waitangi, which is due to arrive here to-morrow (Saturday). This i* not the first time that such has happened and it is high time that such muddling was ended. Tbe harb_.tr mails chose to-morrow and Id consequence of the delay some of the settlers will not get their mail foe another week. Thia is another of the many instances where tne people in the back blocks suffer. Fancy a cityite getting bis mail even a day late, let alone a week I The facts of the case should certainly be brought under tbe notice of tbe Postmaster General. Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure fo r Coughs and Colds never fails. Is 6d and 2s 6d. Don’t forget that good printing can be done at the Fettles Office.
