According to last weeks Government Gazettes, section No 6a. block IV, township of Kawhia, containing 2 rds. (more or less) has been temporarily reserved for police purposes. On Wednesday last, Mr J. C. Barg bunched his new launch, which was admired by a’l. The craft is indeed a c edit to the builder. The christening w.s perfo med by Mrs Berg, sen., the name chosen being Matarua. Thia (Friday) afternoon there was rather an unusual sight at the Kawbia wLarf when two steamers were doubleber bed there—the Rimu and the Waitu gi. We hope some day that we will see d z-jns of steamers in port at the same time.
During the past week a couple of esj yable progressive euchre parties ba-.e been hold in Kawbia, on Monday r ght nt Mr Mo’gsn’s house and on W dne=d.iy night at the residence of Mr - Chase. Ou the fires mentioned occasion the prize winners were—Miss o‘Counor and Mr Frank Newton, the “boobys” being secured by Mrs Wat son and Mr H. Langley. On Wednesday night Mrs Morgan and Mr R >ber f were successful, Miss o‘Connor and Mr Reevps receiving prizes for being the mostTmsuccessful.
A fall in the price of the necessaries of life is always welcome and we are pleased to give Messrs Jonathan Ltd., ihe credit of giving their clients the benefit at the earliest opportunity. Since our last issue Mr Jordan, Crown Linds Ranger, has made a valuation of Te Puru Native Township. “Anxious One”—Your proposal received. Meet me at the euchre parly to-morrow night. The s.s. Rothesay is still laid up, it having been found that another “ portion g( the engine was seriously dam aged in the recent breakdown, neoets - tating the making of a new part. By advertisement it will be noticed that the Northern S.B. Co. intend running an excursion from Kawbia at the time of the visit of the American fleet, the return fare fur which will be only 20s. There has been quite a round of gaiety at Kinohaku aat last issue, dances having held on Friday, Saturday and Monday evenings, at the residences of Mesdames Green, Crotty and Scott respectively. Each was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed.
We learn that the first of the rebates of rent promised by the late Commissioner of Caown Lands to the sufferers by the bush fire at Oparau has just been notified. No doubt the concession will be appreciated by those who did not receive assistance in the shape of grass seed. The Goddard family, of Kinohaku, seem to have struck anpther piece of bad luck, the other day the lad Willie getting kicked by a horse, the front of hia leg being thereby seriously cut. Dr Campbell Jenkins informs us that he is progressing'favourably and that ha will soon be about again—this we hope will be “very” soon.

The 3.3. Rimu arrived from Wanganui on Friday afternoon, having on beard 486 sboep for Morris and Co, of Kawaroa. Wanganui was left on Tuesday, and Cape Eg mo nt made, when heavy | weather came on and Captain Richards wisely returned to that port, leaving again on Thursday. Although the weather was heavy throughout the voyage only four sheep were lost, the owners asserting that the small loss is due to the careful navigation of Captain Richards and also the good qualities of the boat. The Rimu proceeded to Lemon Point this evening co load 100 fat sheep for the Auckland market, consigned by Mr Stanley, and will sail to-morrow (Saturday.)
The Raglan Chronicle says that rather a peculiar position is repotted to have arisen in connection with the proposed removal of the native school buildings from Rao Rao to Kawbia. Mr J. H. Phillips informs us that he purchased some land, including (baton which the school is built, from the Wesleyan Church trustees, subject to the It ase of the school site by the Education Department. One of the conditiora of this lease, however, was that it lipsed if the school remained closed for a certain period, and the specified limo having expired sums time back Mr Phillips claims that the Department has now no title to the bud and therefore no right to enter upon it to remove the buildings.
Mr J. H. Phillips, who attended the sitting of the Native Land Court at Ngaruawahia last week, says the Court dealt with the matter of the sub divisions of the Manuaitu (Aotea) block, and that the native owners nave now no longs? the excuse that they cannot cultivate their land, as it has been individualised. Contrary to expectations the Moerangi block was not 'lan.lt with, the Court having no power to go into the matter as it had received no instructions or “order of reference ” Mr Phillips further informs us that all the progress made at the sitting of the Na'ive Block Comitteeheld in Rag 1»n last winter (which was to have facilitated the sub division ol the Moerangi block) has been lost.— Chronicle.
Can a woman who does not inherit a uata rally artistic senna be taught tn dress with goo I taste? This is the important 'lnestion Monsieur Worth, the famous Parisian (Ire-s designer, discusses in the July i«»uo <>f “ Ihe New Idea,” and in the affirmative. He gives W ell defined rules, by which a o f average WayAWttr dross to the very best a-Tv-intage, if not always in the very latest style. The article is one of several fine special features that form the backbone of r.ho current “New Idea.” Tn additi n to t.i< so there are a number of excellent short st'-ries, and two very amusing and entertaining serial tales, notably “The flirtations of Four,’’ which is by Henrietta Ser)‘unt, and promises to bo a distinct a<Ui j lion to .Australian literature. The regalar departments are replete witfl good things , indeed tbo July issue is what the editor claims for it—tbe boat number of tho «New v Idea” that has over been punished.
