THE Kawhia Settler. FRIDAY, JUNE 5, 1908, COTTAGE HOSPITAL.

The letter from the Rev. Mr Davidson on ’he subject of a Cottage Hospital for Kawhia calls for more than passing notice. Every thoughtful person in our community will at once recognise the importance of the question raif-ed by the rev. gentleman, and follow with keen interest any action that may be taken by oar local bodies to bring about efficient hospital accomodation in our midst. Anyone living within the district of Kawhia who may be so unfortunate as to require treatment at a hospital must now either be taken from 50 to 70 miles to Hamilton or venture a sea voyage to Auckland. F< r urgent cases it would probably be fatal to attempt a journey to Hamilton in the present state of our roads and tbo risks and probable delays attending sea transit to Auckland would be equally aerions. Fortunately, so there have been very few such cases' within the county, but in a growing district continual immunity cannot be reekoned on, and we should at once prepare for possible future eventualities. The Kawhia County is called upon to contribute to the Waikato Hospital and Charitable Aid Board a sum of £l2O 10< per annum, which amouut is eubsi lined by the Government to the extent of 24s for every pound, and the question is, if this sntn of money was divirted to the maintenance of a Cot. f.age Hospital in Kawbia, with the col* k cl tone obtained from paying patients, together with public subscriptions, payments made by Medio*l Clubs*

Forest ?ra* or Oddfellow*’ Lodges, could not a,.competent nurse with staff b® maintained under the management of our Iocs! medical practitioner? The P./mier, we understand, prop ses to visit Knwb*a about the 18th i ist., and it is 'o be hoped that our reqir ements in this respect will be bronghi very prominently to the front by the members of the Conniy CouncH, Town Board and settlers interested r. the movement. We think that it Would not bj out of phu-s inn k th .t » sum ho put on the estimates »-offici<*ui to erect a building equal to our present needs and built in such a way that it cwld be conveniently added to as occasion -ous tated. At Karow» there is a hospital reeerye of four or five acres pies utly and healthily situated, aud if united and vigorous action is taken we may have the satisfaction of seeing before long a start made with what is one of this grow : ug districts most urgent requirements.
