THE Kawhi Settler. FRIDAY, MAY 1, 1908, NOTES.

Ruepayers of the county are reminded that on Saturday, the 16th lost, the poll on the question of raising a loan for wharf extension at Kawhia, and the erection of sheds at Oparau, Aw.iroa and Kinohaku, will be taken at the various places notified in an advertisement in this issue. It is superfluous, wc should imagine, to impress on all the necessity of the loan being carried, as it imperative that the works mentioned above shall be completed before next wool season. The wharf account is in a flourishing condition, and at present about £lOO per year is cleared after expenses have been allowed for, whilst only £BO per annum is necessary for interest and sinking fund. Than, of course, there is the endowment which when leased is estimated will produce £BOO per annum. We know that there are many adverse to raising loans on account of the rates that they keep piling up, but in this case r atepayers can rest assured of this fact that although a rate of 8 16th of 11 in the £ has been struck it will never bavo to be collected, as it is me r e!y struck as a necessary preliminary to the raising of the loan, as provided by the Act under which the loan will be raised.

We Pgain draw the attention of.the Government to the necessity of erecting a bridge over the Oparau river, at the Ferry. This is Kawhia’s main r nd, yet the river cmnot be crossed wi'hout the aid of a pant, whilst if it be night time the only manner in which the other side can be reached is by swimming. This is What happened on of the settlers the other night, and he arrived in Kawhia at 2 30. a.m • wet llir-ugh. whilst papers of valuo which be bad in bis pocket were rained for years this important work h s been asked for, and it is now time thU 'ho G iverjimout took the mat* tea- in band,’before valuable lives are sacrificed at lhv|phoc.
