An American Authority on the Local Paper.

It is the duty of the people of every district to support a. local paper, where there is one, writes a leading American exchange, It works every issue in their interest, take up their grievances, urges their requirements gives prominence to their industries and institutions, and makes their locality known to outsiders. The poorest and most wretch ed. newspaper ever published, is worth ten times its price to every man in the district in which it is published. Ex - Governor Francis, of Missouri, speaks as follows of the local report:—“Each year the local paper gives from £5OO to £lOOO in free advertising space to the community in which it is located. No other agency will or can do this Tha editor in proportion to his means, does more for the town than any other ten more. He ought to be supported, not because they like him personally, or admire his writing, but because the local paper is the best investment local people can make. It may not, perhaps, be brilliantly edited or over crowded with thoughts, bat financially it is of more benefit to the community than the teacher or tbe preacher. Understand me I do not mean morally or intellectually bat financially.” The man who excuses himelf from subscribing to a local paper on *he ground that “times are too bad” must Indeed be in a desperate way—so bad that the saving of threepence per week will tetop him from going on a financial “ bust.”
