Kawhia Town Board.
The usual meeting of the above body was held in Mr Falwasser’s Office on Monday evening last, when there were present—Messrs Jonathan (in the chair), Turrell and Falwasaer. ASSESSMENT GOUBT.
The Clerk said that he had been asked several times as to when the Assessment Court would sit, and had telegraphed to the Department for the information. In reply he had received the following wire from the ValuerGeneral: —“ It is probable that there will not be any necessity for an Assessment Court, as there are only three objections, which we are trying to settle if possible.” DRAINAGE. The Hon. Geo. Fowlds, Minister for Education, wrote as follows:—“I received your letter of the 20th February intimating that the section of land held by me in the township requires filling in or draining. Considering that the section has never been touched in any way, I should think that any nuisance arising therefrom must have been caused by the works of the Town Board or residents of Kawhia, for which I cannot be held responsible. At the same time I do not desire that any nuisance should arise from my property, and, if you will kindly ascertain the cost of the necessary drainage, and let me know of anyone who will undertake the work, I shall be pleased to have the grievance remedied.” The Chairman remarked that it was hardly fair to ask that this section be drained and other sections equally bad allowed to remain. As there was some doubt as to what powers the Board really had the matter was held over until this was ascertained. THE LAMPS. Tenders were received from T. 8. Siroombe (£l2) and W. H. Berg (£10) for lighting the lamps for 12 months, but were thought too high, and the matter was left in the hands of the Clerk to deal with. Cr Turrell the lamps were not to bis liking, though they may be “.good old country lamps.” The Chairman thought that Mr Ward should be interviewed, and informed that the lamps were not satisfactory, and that be be asked to fix them up. Cr Turrell agreed to attend to the matter. GENERAL. Mr Barton offered £2 per year for the lease of section 8, block V, which was accepted. An account for £1 Is was passed to H. H. Pettit. The Chairman w»<i asked to attend to the matter of billiard room licenses, which the Council promised to hand over to the Board. It was decided to repair the footpath leading to the County offices.
