MR CHASE’S TEAM V. KINOHAKU. I'heae is no gsineaying the fact that cricket has ceep very slow in Kawhia during the piust season—in fact all round the harbour, and reason is not easily expla .netl. Mr Chase who is a keen enthm iast decided that before the season terminated it would be well to get a team together and phy Kino haku, and J'his match eventuated on Saturday laut at Kawhia. The wes« ther up to tbe day had been very wet, but r oriuna<ely it cleared up, and tbe sun shining brilliantly tbe conditions were very favourable. It is doubtful if there has been a bitrger crowd present at a cri iket |match for years past, tha majority being ladies. Kinohaku sent a big contingent to watch tbeir mon win (which they eventually did), whilst supporters of the local team were numerous. The respective captains were Messrs Chase and F. Derecourt, the latter being spacially asked by Kinobahu’s elected skipper (J. Cfrotty) to do so. Our o’d friend “ Jick ” wai present, and although he cmid not ph y.on accmut of his recent. illness he umpired, ev> iug pleased tc see him about again. T. Ashbolt ocoipied a similar position for the combined team. The het neutioned eleven started proceedings, but the display was not verl brillian > (lack of practice being the catKo) atd they were all disposed cf for 43. Chase showed good form for 18, while; F. Newton hit hard for nine, but Joi rdaiu was going as well rs anyone when he was unfortunately run out. Pi rppr and F. Derecourt,as veual, did th > bowling, the former being barticula ’ly deadly, though he did not aet so m my wickets as hia mate. Kinohaku replied with 72, the top scorers beinp: H. Derecourt 13, A. Fairfax 12 ai d Nealey 10. The two champion bat p, F. Derecourt and W. Wright, wen i got rid of for 6 and 4 respectively, aach being bawled by F NewtoDj who bowled splendidly throughout, iuisbiug up with 4 wickets for 10 ritw, off 11 oyers, six of which were maidens. Kawhia’s bowling lacked st ng, no less than fi.emea being tried. Chase’s teem again went to the wic kete, and when stumps were drawn had 2 wickets dovu for 16 run% Jonathan hitting well for 11. During an|interval in the play Mrs Chase handed afternoon Jtea ground to the players and visitors, the refreshments being much appreciated.
At the conclusion of the match cheers were given by the teams for each other, and conjointly for Mr and Mrs Chase.
