Election Notice. TO THE CROWN LAND TENANT? OF THE AUCKLAND LAND DISTRICT. RADIES AND GENTLEMEN,— I beg to offer my*- If as a for tbe seat on the Auckland Lanr Board vacated by the Hon. W. W M'Cardle, and venture to ask your sup p rt on tbe following grounds: let and chit-fly, on tbe score of ex perience. The whole of my life has been spent on tbe land, in what is known as the “ back-blocks ” and in breaking in virgin country. For the past twenty years I have been a Crown Tenant under the following tenures, viz., deferred payment, small grazing run, O.R.P. and L.LP. The trouble* and hardships that beset tbe pioneer while handling hisland, handicapper by bad roads, r r no road?, are familiar 11 me, and settlers so placed will meet with a sympathetic advocate whenever and wherever my services are called for and can be of use.

2nd. I understand distinctly that should I be honoured by being eleced to the Land Board) lam to re present, and do all that i? possible for Crown Land I claim that my experience will effectively help into deal with any question 'affecting th-ir interests that may come before <be Board.

Although the question does not arise in this election 1 would say that I be lieve that the Freehold Tenure is thenars under which land should b> by settler? if they desire it. 1 believe it is the tenure that, nowan ultimately will prove most benefieii o the district, the state and tbe set ler, and most emphatically do I betiev* thia in tbe case of settlers taking up new country. Tbe Colur.ial born with experience behind him has as yet not been heard from on this question, or on what we are more immediately con c '-ned with, the settlement of the back c< un ry. j

I am proud to be able to claim Nev Zealand R 8 t ! >e C 'untry of my birth, and give place to none in my regard to tbe Dominion and belief in her destinies. With all respect I euggee hat it will be well if Crown Tenants endeavour to obtain the services of such a one (myself or any other)— and ufc him. I have tbe honor to he, Yours Faithfully, WILLIAM J. SHAW. EXTRACT tfROM THE “ KAWHU BETTLBB,” JANUARY 24th, 1908. The nomination of Mr W. J. Shaw for the eeat on the Auckland Land Board, vacated by the Hon. W. W. M‘Cardie, will meet with very general approval, not only here, but we venture to think in all the adjoining districts, and should an election even tuate be strongly supported. This is the first occasion when a member of tbe Land Board will obtain bis seat, nominated and elected by the people, and not as a nominee of the Govern meet. It is a privilege we hope will not be lightly held by electors; it should be considered by all interested worthy of great effort to put in a suitable and strong man and a true representative of tbe country, and especially the back block settler. In this respect Mr Shaw " fills tbe bill.” The son of an old pettier, colonial bora, be has lived all his life in country districts ; for the last 20 years be has hold land under all tbe various tenures, and what, is more farmed hie holdings successfully—in fact his life has been spent as pupil and master iq tbe school of experience; being keen and intelligent he has gained sure and solid knowledge of all that goes to make country life, and all the many needs of tbe struggling up-country settier, be is therefore entitled to speak with authority and to be beard con--ide*ately on ail matters affecting country interests and such as usually come before a Land Board In addition to having the necessary experience bo hue shown as Chairman of the Kinohaku branch of the Farmers Union and Chairman of the Kawhia County Council both energy and ability. We believe that Mr Shaw has not allowed himself to be nominated for a eeat on the Board for any ulterior motive or to serve any petty personal ambition, but because the work entailed comes within the scope of his life work in which he takes such deep and absorbing interest.
