Xlecdsa Notice TO THE CROWN LAND TENANTS OF THE AUCKLAND LAND DISTRICT. . AND GENTLEMEN,— I beg to offer myself as a Candidate for tbe seat on the Auckland Land Board vacated by the Hon. W. W. M'Cardle, and venture to ask your support on tbe following grounds Ist and chiefly, on tbe score of experience. The whole of my life has been spent on tbe land, in what is known as the “ back- blocks ” and in breaking in virgin country. Fnr the past twenty years I have been a Crown Tenant under tbe following tenures, viz., deferred payment, small grazing run, 0.8. P. aud L.I.P. The troublesand bard-hips that beset tbe pioneer while handling hMand, handicappi-d bv bad roads, rno roads, are familiar t me, aud setters so plao d will meet | with a sympa'hetio advocate whenever ; and wherever my service* are called for i and can be of u*e. ' 2nd. I underhand distinctly that | should I be h- noured by being »leced to the Land Board) lam to re pre*en f , and d'> ail that is possible for Crown L-tnd Tenants. I claim that my experience will eff -ctively help me to deal with any question affecting their interests that may come before the Board. Although the question does not arise in this election 1 would B*y that I believe that the Freehold Tenure is tbe enure under which land should be held by settlers if • they desire it. I believe it is thb tenure that nowand ultimat* ly will prove most beneficial to the di-trict, the state and tbe set 'ler, and mo*t emphatically do I believe his in tbe case of settlers taking up n*w c luntry. Tbe col nial born with experierce behind him has as yet not been beard from on this que-tion, or •n what we are m r e immediately CO” 0 ed wi b, he se tl uet of the ba> k i un r\ j

'A i h all re-pect I sngges but i will t>e well it Crown Tenan's nd- avour to obtain the services ol uch h or e (myself or any other) • d n e him. I have the honor to he, Y i»ra Fait! fully. WILLIAM J. SHAW. EXTRACT FROM THE *’ KAWHIA SETTLER,” JANUARY 24th, 1908. The nomination of Mr W. J. Shaw f->r the seat on tbe Auckland Land Board, vacated by the Hon. W. W. M‘C<«rdle, will meet with very general approval, not only here, but we venure to think in all the adjoining distric’s, and -b uld an election eventual ebe strongly supported. This is ’ e first ooc'ision when a member of the Land Board will obtain his sea- >- minted and elected by rhe people, d utx >t- a nominee ' f the Govern men . J. is a privilege we h- pe will ut b Igoly held by eluc rn; it sboul l b. e by all interested r by of gre-it < ff .rt to pur in a -uir.--fble and stroi g man and a true re i re-entative of the country, and e-pe-nally 'he back bl ck elder. In this respect Mr Bh»w “ fills the bill.” Tbe on of an old settler, c lonial borr, be bas lived all his lit* in country dist iers; tor the last 20 years he ha* bold land under all (be various tenure-, and what is m»re farmed his holdings Hucces-fnl y— in fact his life ba® been spent as pupil ai.d master in tbe school of exp“rience ; being keen and intelligent be b*s gained sure and olid knowledge of all that goes to roake country life, and all tbe many needs of the struggling up country settler, be is therefore entitled to speak with authority and to bb heard considerately on all matters affecting country interests and such as usually come before a Land Board. Io addition to having tbe necessary experience he has shown as Chairman of the Kmobsku branch of tbe Farmers Union and Chairman of tbe Kawhia County Council both energy and ability. We believe that Mr Shaw has not allowed himself to be nominated for a seat on tbe Bo ird for any ulterior motive or »o serve any petty personal ambition, but because the woik entailed comes wit bin the scope of his life work id which be takes such deep and absorbing interest.
