We do not say ibis in a vainglorious tfpirif but with a sense of ihanktuluees, and also with much aatisfaotioL at the. correctness of our forecast both as regards the settlers and Sbttubr. There is always much r.iugb work to bo dooe, mnny real hardships to face, titul Liia<e ineand as well as physical to n'6derg >, by th >su who breakyi new country—civiliaiatiun is not introduced throughout the waste lands of the Dominion by men in kid gloves —iu the settled parts of hour.; County, civilization, if uot exactly of the kid glove kind, is making sure headway, and though v&ry much remains to be done, the settlers are nuw beginning to feel the good of past Ju-?,
dividual effort, and of the work done by the Omuty Council, and the Government. -Wt are at the very begining of settlen?oot ?n Kawhia, yet even now otat* twice a wewksteatnev is hard-

In oar small County alone there is Rt least 125,000 acres of valuable native and other land practically a waste, unprofitable aud unoccupied, aud in the adjoining counties ofßiglan, Waitomo and Awakino, raet areas of land are in a similar position. This is a state of things impossible to continue for much longer, and with.ils discontinuance will come a wave of prosperity through the County such as the most sanguine have hardly yet anticipated. Meantime the settlers as a whole are to be congratulated on their present position, and the steady progress made by them toward material well be z ing since we took over the conduct of this paper without our drawing on the more or less distant future prospects. We beg to offer onr hearty congratulations, ■ with the good oldgreeting, customary at this season, of A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEa.R.
