While freely opening our colnmns for the discussion of public matters we do not necewarily identify ourselves with the opinions exprewed by correspondents. We wish this to be distinctly understood.]
(to the EDITOR.) Bib. —There are at present among the natives several slaves in the true sense of the term, and although relatives of their oppressors they are treated as slaves. A case occurred near KaWhia where a young girl vzas struck on the bead with a stick, remaining inBensible|for some time. The British law doe- not reach such cases and it is alm- at impoB>ible to get reliable information regarding them outside the natives themselves. But the time has Dow come when those natives whose cruelty requires repression must be made amenable co the British law, as the natives by marriage with Europeans, are so to say part of our people. No information can be given, as th*, letter is only to educate the European.to the fact that there is need for a closer inspection into naive custom; here.—Yours, etc , INTERESTED
