LOCAL SHIPPING COMPANY.

(to the editor.) Sir, —We don't hear much about a led shipping company or inducing another company to send a boat here n.»w. The Waitangi is not large enough for our trade, but as at present wti only require stores and farm requisites it is probable that when we have sheep to send to tbe Waitara freezer a suitable vessel will be found to cany sheep, or a vessel with a freezer to carry frozen mutton to the Home stea-I mers will be forthcoming. The Northern S.S. Co., being an Auckland company probably represents Auckland to a great extent. If we sent our orders to Wellington instead of Auckland a boat to bring the goods here wohld nt once be f iund. So that as the boat or boats doing our trade are induced to come here by those who employ them, and if we decide to patronise Wellington in preference to Auckland, we can get a small steamer to do tbe carrying. But egain we must look at the other side. Auckla d is our town, and although most of us are Southerners we are only doing our duty to Auckland by giving her ou* trade. Auckland prices are a shade below Wellington tor selling produce and above Wellington in buying goods, but we must remember that Auc dind will undoubtedly advance to the same commercial status as the Southern t;>wns of the Dominion before long. I- there enough freight to and from Kawhia at present to make it worth the trouble of puttirg on notber boat? If the Northern Co. w-re to lowor their freights and passages they wo”ld undoubtedly stop op p -siiion, but any opposition boat would require to be owned by the farmers, h v? a speed to excel opposition and b: up to date and well found. No d ,übs after shearing we may have more time to arrange this business.— Yours, etc., FARMER,
