Concert at Marokopa.
Last Friday was a red letter day at Marokopa, for ih the evening the first concert ever held there took place iu the cook bouse belohging to the Milling Company. For the occasion this structure bad been transformed into a small theatre stage, footlights, drop scene and all the etceteras-—and looked particularly pretty. The room wa» tilled to overflowing, all the settlers aud Maoris attending, and those who were present were amply repaid as the programme was not only excellent, but well carried out from first to iast. The concert was organised to raise funds to help towards the building of a school at the Heads, and the result was that £l2 was cleared—a yerv handy sum. The first part of the programme was a minstrel circle, the “gage” and jokes of the corner men (Messrs Hargreaves, Saunders, Beader and Hawkins) were both witty and clever. Mr Marcus made a mos* proficient “ Mr Johnson,” and kept the items going merrily. The programme rendered was aa follows : —Opening chorus, “ I Love You,” Company ; overture aud cake walk by the corner men ; “ Nur* eery Rhymes,” Corner Men; song, Lucinda,” Mr Saunders ; song, *• I’m TtyingsoHard to Forgot Yon,” Mrs Willison; comic song, “ Ob, Ebenezer,” Mr Hawkins; song, “ Queen of the Earth,” Mr Marcus ; song, “ A White Man,” Mr Hargreaves: song, ** Alabama Coon,” Miss Rosie Willison ; song, “ Baggins," Mr Reader. Part ll.—Recitation, Miss Ollie Willison ; guitar and banjo daet, Messrs Marcus and Hargreaves : song, “ Do You Care?” Mr Hargreaves, song, “ Doreen,” Mr Marcn* ; song, “ Island of Dream%” Mr P. Bell; daet, “ Juinita,” Mesdames Reader and WilI’ison ; song, Mr Saunders - soug, Mr Line*, golden shoe dance, Mr Hargreaves ; faree, “ The Barber.” At ths conclusion of the concert a sumptuous sapper was partaken of (supplied by Mrs Willison), after which dancing was proceeded with and kept going with great z.ea.l until daylight next morning. Special mention is necessary nf tbs splendid work done by Mr S. Martin (sawmill foreman) Mr R.Granville, Mr Lans (director of the Milling C 0.,) Mrs Willison, Mr Marcus, and Mr H-rgreavos. The accompaniments were faithfully played by Mr Bell,senr, of Ha'ih&ri.
