(from our own correspondent Tiie weather has been squab from an easterly direction with con*tan rain. Lambing has not started, and tha; is very lucky as the wea her is unsuitable. Those who own stock dog? =houl-l keep them at home if they have ar-y consideration for sbeep breeder* Those owning sheep here are poison ng their paddocks, so that when lambing starts stray curs sbail have departed this life. The Okupata bridge is now open, the earth-work having been done by Messrs Morgan and M’Burney in a capable manner The Okupata and Oparauroads are now only fit for a mud launch. The local prople have one aud all caught on to the Wellington steam boat idea, which will shortly be an accomplished fact. The Northern 8. 8. Co., have bad their day. They refused to lower freights when asKed. We get cheaper trade and larger prices for produce in Wellingt in. Most of tbe settlers here come from southwards and naturally still stick to the South. Onehunga to Auckland rei! freight, combined with high Northern 8.8. Co., freights have made us glad to take the Southern boat offered. Oue settler here has had 8| sheep per acre ou a second year burn all winter ; both sheep and feed are looking well. Although sheep do well here cattle do not, as the land is’rather steep in places. Settlers complain of Kawhia wharf goods being left exposed to weather. Is the £5OO proposed loan sufficient to do the required work, and how long J>efore it is done ?
